Foreign affairs leaders' debate
April 20, 2010 10:41 pm 2 Comments
A perusal of the manifestos suggests that during Thursday’s debate on foreign policy and defence, Gordon Brown won’t be saying “I agree with Nick” very often. The phrase “I agree with David” may not pass Mr Brown’s lips but – with the exception of policy on Europe – the two bigger parties have more in [...]

Extra troops for Afghanistan completely misses the point

So, come the small hours this side of the Atlantic, President Obama will address the American nation and confirm his intention to more fully pursue The Bush Doctrine which began in Iraq, through Afghanistan. Bush surged into Baghdad; Obama will surge into Kabul. Meanwhile here Gordon Brown has pre-surged, carefully timing his 500 reinforcements yesterday, [...]

Security council 'no show' follows rant by Gaddafi
September 25, 2009 10:02 am 1 Comment
There was one bright spot in the Prime Minister’s day at the UN on Thursday. Colonel Gaddafi did not bother to turn up for the security council meeting. It’s just a coincidence that Libya happens to hold one of the rotating seats on the council at the moment but we all expected it was a [...]

Too special to be snubbed?

Snub-gate has made it on board Air Force One. The row over whether or not Gordon Brown was “snubbed” by President Obama because he didn’t get a sit-down, one-on-one, meeting with him (despite repeated requests from Downing Street) has now been taken up by the White House press corps. On board the presidential plane [...]

Snubbed by Gordon Brown at the United Nations
September 24, 2009 9:36 pm 3 Comments
Gordon Brown is a very angry man today. That much was obvious from my all too brief encounter with him this afternoon. I was holed up in the tiny offices the British mission have here in the UN building along with political editors from BBC, ITV Sky and Five News. Waiting to take our turns [...]

African nations and the UN join the G8 talks
July 10, 2009 11:24 am No Comments
I am losing count of the Gs. Yesterday we had the G8 + G5 (including China and India) + 1. The 1 was Egypt. Today we have the G8 + 9 + 7, which includes African nations and international institutions like the UN, but perhaps we should take away 1 from that list – so [...]

A bluffer's guide to this week's G8 summit
July 8, 2009 11:26 am 3 Comments
By the time you are reading this I hope to be supping on mozzarella di bufala in a medieval Italian hilltop town full of churches stuffed with paintings by Renaissance masters. The reality will probably be that I shall be going through umpteen security scanners along with some 3000 other journalists queuing for the G8 [...]

Needed: something to shake this summit up

Just off the PM’s plane in sunny Rome. Brown relaxed and on good form. The worst month of his premiership behind him? Though of course this could be his last G8, with election next year.
