Sri Lanka's Tamils wait for President Rajapaksa to deliver
General Sarath Fonseka has yet to concede, but it’s pretty clear he’s lost Sri Lanka’s presidential election.
The indication is that President Mahinda Rajapaksa won by a substantial margin, although the opposition is crying foul. The general is now holed up in a hotel in Colombo. He has reasons to be fearful.
This has just appeared on YouTube. Gripping stuff.
Sri Lanka has a history of post-election violence and reprisal. There are many who are surprised that the general made it through the campaign alive.
As I write, it’s all pretty murky out there.
Official election results have apparently just been announced to reporters by the Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake, giving Rajapaksa 58 per cent of the vote against Fonseka’s 40 per cent.
Not long before that, the Sri Lanka Guardian newspaper was talking of “strong rumours floating about in Colombo” that the commissioner had been placed under house arrest.
Aside from the triumphantist ethnic Sinhalese nationalists who turned out in large numbers to return Mahinda Rajapaksa to power for a second term, Sri Lanka’s Tamil minority now also has reasons to be fearful.
Many will doubt that, having apparently won a fresh mandate, Rajapaksa (pictured below after casting his vote in Tuesday’s poll) will be interested in engaging in serious dialogue with the island’s Tamil minority – 20 per cent of the population – or grant them autonomy.

Reports from the north of Sri Lanka suggest that explosions in Jaffna as polls opened on Tuesday were, in the words of a longstanding Sri Lankan political analyst “a deliberate policy employed to spread fear” and keep voters away from ballot boxes. Many of the eligible but displaced Tamil civilians were reportedly unable to vote.
The independent Centre for Monitoring Election Violence in Sri Lanka has today expressed concerns about vote counting and the “integrity of the electoral process” in a letter to the elections commissioner.
General Fonseka and his team have also alleged voter fraud and rigging.
The international media monitoring organisation Reporters Sans Frontiers, reports that the two main state-owned television stations devoted 96.75 per cent of their news coverage to Mr Rajapaksa.
It was a hard-fought and bitter contest between the two men who claimed victory over the Tamil Tiger insurgency.
For Tamil voters, they presented a bit of a Hobson’s choice between the president who led the campaign and the (now retired) general who executed it. Both are accused by international human rights groups of war crimes, into which there have been no independent investigations.
Most Tamil parties, including the Tamil National Alliance – formerly the political mouthpiece for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam – swung behind Fonseka, who’d overseen the final bloody showdown last May.
But voter turnout in the north and the east, where most Tamils live, was reportedly much lower than in the Sinhalese majority areas.
This will have deprived Fonseka of votes he would have needed to have had any serious hope of unseating Rajapaksa.
As to the plight of the allegedly coup-plotting general and his family: he’ll probably do some deal enabling him to slip into exile. For Sri Lanka’s Tamils, a solution is less clear.
“There are a lot of reasons to doubt the willingness of a second Rajapaksa administration to enact the necessary reforms,” says Alan Keenan, Sri Lanka analyst for the International Crisis Group.
In his victory speech to the Sri Lankan parliament last year, following the Tigers’ defeat, Rajapaksa, speaking in the Tamil language, promised equal rights for Tamils and took “personal responsibility” for protecting them.
They’re still waiting and most are not hopeful. There are many things Tamils need Rajapaksa to deliver on.
They need to be a part of the redevelopment of the north and east of the island. They need their basic human rights and freedoms guaranteed. They need their voice to be heard and proper political representation. And they need proper accountability for crimes against the Tamil civilian population.
If there’s any indication so far as to what Rajapaksa is going to do, look no further than the final revealing words of the interview he gave to Lakbima news on Sunday.
“What,” he was asked, “is the message you give Tamil-speaking people?”
“For those who speak Tamil,” the president said, “[I say] now I too speak Tamil. So there is no problem at all.”
So that’s fine then.

Lets see the percentage of Tamil votes received by Rajapakshe.
There is nothing called a free lunch.
Its a give and take.
Keep filthy hands and speculation off Sri Lanka Tamil issue.
We are aware how the Western Worlds acted over 30 years.
Tamils do not need to beg from Rajapukse.
We leave the begging to Rajapukse from China, Iran etc. The Singhala society is still have a feudal mindset and will remain impoverished.
Another civil war is in the horizon which will see the emergence of Tamil Eelam.
I think it is time for the International Community to honor the choice of Sri Lankans and assist them to develop the country.
Rajapakse will not grant any autonomy to Tamils beyond the current provincial system Sri Lanka has. Tamils voted overwhelmingly for Fonseka and Rajapakse won mainly on Sinhalese vote so he has no pressure to do anything for Tamils.
Western countries should stop pushing Sri Lanka towards China and Russia and should engage them in a constructive manner instead of lecturing them. Sri Lanka is not going to listen to that. It is very clear now.

Fantastic comment brilliant way to go forward together, under one country with such visionary minds.
These are the exact reasons why a Tamil Eelam for Tamils is necessary.
Great!! Sri Lanka is no longer a slave of the west. Sri Lanka has its own lessons and experiences which westerners do not have. Oneday, Sri Lanka will be able to teach the Europe and America on “How to defreat Trrorism?”
Well, it’s true that Rajapakse won mainly on the sinhala votes.. that’s because the sinhalese are the majority, and democracy is all about catering to what the majority wants, so i don’t see why anyone should have a problem with it.
Let the two demons fight against each other.
Tamils are Happy….
Urgent comment left on Times article, Sri Lanka under lock down and turmoil!
All media outlet and communication cut off, votes RIGGED by a colossal amount! Electoral commissioner and opposition under siege!

“I understand from my business associates who have begged that I bring this news to the entire world that the Electoral Commissioner, who bravely stood up to the government has been taken by gun point by rajapakse’s brother and is held hostage until he declares the rajapakse president. The results have been rigged and 50% has been added to rajapakse in reality General Fonseka had won it. The guests at the hotel have been removed and the entire opposition are surrounded. Fonsekas security have been arrested on the basis that they are army deserters. General Fonseka has begged for overseas help to rescue him and for publicity to his plight to be aired. However nothing is getting out as the media is suppressed. What a beautiful country ruined by a family of morons. Sri Lankans who are cheering this man should be ashamed if you want your country back get this bunch of thieves out.”
Please stop spreading lies.
I think many cannot accept the fact that Sri Lankans selected Rajapakse as the President over their favorite Fonseka.
Rajapakse got over 1.8 million majority. That is an impossible number to rig. Most people outside Sri Lanka have no clue how the elections are run in Sri Lanka. It is not ideal but nothing closer to the elections run by dictators.
Estern countries and westerners should staway from SL. You cannot bully third world countries. What ever western countries do is fine. SL is better off than this so called friends. They only listen to one side and LTTE.
Look at as an example what happened to Milosavic’s Serbia and Sadam’s Iraq. There is no place on earth in the west for violators of human rights. So there is no engagement for the west with Rajapakse’s Srlanka.
“Human rights” is just a word of rhe west
to control poor countrie & rob them.
Just take a map & see all the countries with tremendous natural resources but poor.
Wake up ;;;;;;;;;
Born ceylonese, not a Srilankan, however I am sad, how this country has descented to this low level because of Mahavamsa Ideology. unless this mindset changes there is no future for theTamils. Let China, India,Russia help but the country is being mortgaged to them. it is not this generation who will be paying these debts it is the future generation. Mahinda will make hay while his sun shines on him. become his relative you will be appointed as a chairman of some cooporation. no need for any qualifications, just be his relative. plunder as much as you could. who knows what is round the corner, we may have a chinese rule more likely than an Indian rule.within few years from now.I understand there is a Stone [carving]writing in Trinco tracing the rulers of this Island and it has been suggested that finally there will be a chinese rule, after the sinhala rule [since 1948- ?]
Associating with the Tamils earned the wrath if the Sinhalese which led to the downfall of Sarath Fonseka. If not he probably would have won!
I would say Singhalese mass does not care Corruption and Autocratic rule. They also do not care for political dynastry and high COL. For them ruling over the minority is vital. This is the attitude of majority community
The ‘democratic’ verdict in Sri Lanka very clearly goes against the paradigm ‘post-war national reconciliation’ the IC attempts to impose on the peoples of the island. Because twisting the national question of Tamils.
The level of democracy in the island was best illustrated by the defeated presidential candidate called for the intervention of ‘outside governments’ to prevent dictatorship and to protect democracy.
The election results also places India in a more precarious position in its competition with China. It’s support to Colombo Govt is an atrocious war crime. Tamils are undergoing unspeakable hardship, and terror . Failure to ensure safety to Sri Lanka Tamils is a moral disgrace to India. After a brutal war which claimed so many lives, Tamils deserve to have their voices heard and their votes counted. “The intimidation and restrictions intended to stop Tamils from voting shows how little value Tamils have in Sri Lanka to those bent on holding on to power at any cost.”
“By deliberately disenfranchising voters, the present Sri Lankan government has ensured Tamils will continue to feel like second-class citizens on the island
This is from the LTTE mouthpiece Tamilnet
Please understand that Sri Lanka will not be divided and there will not be any Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka. NEVER.
Please leave innocent Tamils live in Sri Lanka alone and let them live peacefully with Sinhalese and Muslims.
Jonathan Miller, Speak what you know please. Generally, post election violence happens when the UNP wins, not the other way round. Unfortunately for some reason, it is the bitter truth in the recent history of the country. You have to respect the country and its people before you comment on them. This Willoughby is a joke and a remnant of the LTTE, just listen to International Election Monitors and the US state department comments. The election was free and fair and Rajapakse is the president for the next 6 years. Fonseka has reasons to fear, not from the government but from the people who were affected by his foul mouth. He accused the government of war crimes (later retracted) and that cost the country a collosal income when the EU stopped GSP+. The people who lost jobs due to that and the poor soldiers who contributed to the war victory against terrorists are the groups that will taunt him for years to come. There have been elections before and the candidates who contested are still around. It is only Fonseka who has found himself in a trap of bankrupt politicians. also, you don’t worry about Tamils, they have many Tamil leaders in the country to deal with.
Savvy readers should not fret over the comments of a certain ‘Wilfred Anthony’ (surely one of Basil’s lackeys?). He’s merely a toothless organ of the propaganda dictatorship of Rajapakse Family Inc. The incumbent cabinet no doubt played an underhand and undemocratic role to stage control the entire elections (with the aid of a neighbouring country).
Even the poor election commissioner was held incommunicado and forced to announce Rajapaxa as the ‘winner’. Probably heeding the precedents of mutual ‘friends’ in the international community, like Iran, Burma & Zimbabwe. All pillars of democracy in their own right ofcourse as Mssr Anthony will have you to believe!
Meanwhile, dogs of misinformation like this unfortunate ‘Wilfred Anthony’ (aka Yapa Rupasinghe) have been let loose across all forums, comment sections and online sites to give acclaim to Rajapakse’s ‘pious’ election victory. It takes only a few ruppees of Sri Lankan public expenses to buy such armchair ‘patriots’.
I have just read the article in full to find maliciously fabricated lies and lies in it. You call it journalism, do you?
Elections commissioner under housearrest or anything but controlling the country in his way in the last few days. He cancelled Presidential orders to transfer Army and Police area chiefs in the North Central and North. He appointed a competent authority to run the state owned electronic media. He warned and ordered the Police chief to remove banners of the president and other candidates. He has been busy but he held press conferences as well. where were you? Were you busy making bogus videos?
Another lie is Tamil percentage. The North and East Tamil percentage is only 11% not 20% as you say. The rest are peaceful Indian Tamils in the Central Tea areas. They are not interested in a separate country but a residence permit, fo you didn’t know.
You report from sri Lanka Guardian. Did you see they reporetd yesterday the President has left for India after voting? It was obviously to give the voters a shock during the day that Rajapakse is feeling the heat and left the country, so don’t vote for him. Have you ever been to a school, if to take cover from rain?
Another apologist for the ‘white-van’ demockracy of king rajapakse! that’s a shame professor, in what faculty exactly? And where did you get your Professor of Propaganda honours? Surely not conferred by the infamous University of Temple Trees? like fonzie publicly stated today, “you’ve all lost your nut”. and that from a decorated general.
Tamil has totally rejected this brutal president ‘Rajapaksha’ all over the srilanks not only in North & East. Even in colombo Saraht has won whereever tamils lives majority. This shows to international community ‘tamil eelam’ is the only solutions for them. this time there is no LTTE to ask tamils not to vote as the Internation community says untill this minute .
Correction Tamil population in SL is only 12% not 20%..
And what ever the power we give should not help separatism and Tamil chauvinism…
Tamils did not care about who comes to power that is the reason why most of them boycotted the election. Both candidates are extremists and would not do anything to bring peace in that country. Well Sinhalese voted for a dictator over another. we will have to wait and see how things unfold. Unfortunately for Tamils, nothing good will come out of either of them. I am sure if LTTE was still here, they ‘analysts’ and ‘media’ would have said they forced people to stay away from election. This time Tamils proved that they did not believe in Sri-Lankan ‘democratic’ system, regardless of LTTE’s existance or not.
NEVER!! You will not see any Tamil Ealam in this tiny beautiul Island. It is not the only solution for Tamils. If it is so, they have to find it in India at first. Because, the Tamil majority is in TamilNadu. Do you know the meaning of Tamil Nadu? It is “The Land of Tamils”. But India does not have Tamil in their National lnguage list at least. So why do you seek a lnad for Tamils in Sri Lanka where there is no sign of Tami Origin. Please do not raise any ethnic problems in the country any more. All the nations in Sri Lanka have suffred enough for 3 decades. Please leave them in peace an harmony. We have a Great Great Culture that you do not expect. We want to secure that for the sake of the future. Let the President lead that movement.
If you are not a historian don’t pedal falsehoods. The whole island never belonged to the Sinhalese. Tamils are perhaps the original inhabitants of the Island. Maybe your ancestors in Sri Lanka spoke Tamils before the wave of Buddhism from South India swept through the Island. (Nothing wrong about being proud of your great culture. But do you know how old Sinhala is and why a third of the words are from Tamil?) You may be aware that the only literary work involving Buddhism is in Tamil. Sinhalese themselves claim to have come from North East of India as Kallathonis. So mind what you say madam.Tamils don’t want to suffer only to let Sinhalese enjoy the island. At least start thinking of Federalism. Eelam will be realised one day if Sinhalese people don’t change their ways.
Lets face the truth. MR did not win Tamil areas because of the governments absence from those areas due to the LTTE. It takes a while for those people to integrate to the Democratic system of Sri Lanka. The message by the way is that MR has to win all the people over regardless whether they are tamils or Sinhalese.
One had said that there will be a revival of the LTTE. et me tell you my friend.”Only in your dreams.” Not only our president, we as a nation will crush any attempt for terrorism as well as undue inteference by the West.
If Sri Lankan want a thug state, let them have it. Leace Tamils alone.
The Muslim predominant Sammanthurai in the east voted Rajapakse with mere 4%.
All human being in the world has self determination. then why not tamils?.
This what tamil has clearly proved in this election to international which still belive in democracy . bofore the british rule in srilanka tamils ruled 1/3 rd of srilanka. British only merged tamils & sinhalase for thier easy management. while british govenment leave the country ,they gave the power in the hands of majority. since then tamils(minority) are not treated with equal rights as sinhalees. Tamils started asking thier rights in a democracy way for many years. Then only this arms struggle was started by tamil freedom fighters (LTTE) with the support of TAMILS.
I strongly support Channel Four/ Jonathan Miller reportage concerning Tamil genocide in Sri Lanka. It was a real prove of moral conscience in favour of Human rights. Jon Snow questioning Sri Lanka UN ambassador was a wonderful opportunity to watch what real good journalism it can be done. It was an extraordinary lesson for what investigating journalism it is for. Please, do not forget the Human rights situation in Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.
