Sri Lanka continues to threaten and bully journalists
Channel 4 News Foreign Editor Ben De Pear writes on how journalists are being intimidated by the Sri Lankan authorities
Last night Sri Lankan state TV described certain journalists as “traitors” following the UN Human Rights Council’s vote yesterday. Being a journalist, or rather attempting to be a free reporting journalist in Sri Lanka, is dangerous enough. Having your photo on the TV and being labelled a traitor must be petrifying.
Today the threats have become more direct. The outspoken minister Mervyn Silva (pictured below, right) today declared in public: “I am the one who chased Poddala Jayantha (a journalist) from Sri Lanka.” He also named other journalists Sunanda Deshapriya, Nimalka Fernando, Poddala Jayantha and Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, who he claimed were “traitors”, saying he would break their limbs in public.
“If you get caught by me in Sri Lanka, I will break your limbs in public. I say this responsibly. No matter who conspires against me,” he says to a crowd of demonstrators, and surrounded by journalists and cameras.
Last Sunday I attended the premiere of Sri Lanka’s Killing fields: War Crimes Unpunished in Geneva with the film’s director and producer, Callum Macrae. The film is a follow-up to Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields, which was broadcast last year and caused major ructions in Sri Lanka and the United Nations, and is cited as a major contributing factor to the UN vote yesterday which called on the country top properly investigate the war crimes charges against it.
Both films and an extensive body of reports by Channel 4 News have examined the evidence of alleged war crimes at the end of Sri Lanka’s civil war in 2009.
After the film was screened, Callum took questions from the floor. There were quite a few Sri Lankans in the auditorium, and many of them were keen to ask questions. Also in the room was a film crew which was paying particular interest to the Sri Lankans asking questions. After a while it became unsettling for those asking to be filmed by people whose identities and motivations were unclear, so we asked if they could identify themselves or stop filming.
There have been repeated reports of intimidation and harassment of exiled Sri Lankan journalists by Sri Lankan diplomats around the world, and the country sent a party of over 100 to the recent Human Rights Council meetings in Geneva.
Today the Committee to Protect Journalists and the United Nations have called on the government in Sri Lanka to stop its intimidation of journalists. “The government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa has a long and alarming record of intolerance to criticism,” said Bob Dietz, CPJ’s Asia programme coordinator.
“The international community must be extra vigilant in ensuring that Sri Lankan journalists are not subjected to reprisals for voicing their concerns to the human rights council.”

channel 4, dont take that man seriously..
he is a comedian.. in movies you will see beside villan there will be a joker attached thats how this guy is to mahinda.. in tamil we call them ‘kaamidi peesu’
This is the attitude of the Sinhala leaders since Independence from the British and Tamils have been intimidated, humiliated, threatened and attacked as there is full and complete impunity for the Sinhala abusers.
Rather than broadcasting fake war crimes ? , channel 4 here you have a news?
This Mervyn Silva is a Drug Dealer and why government protecting him ? That is one of real problem in Sri Lanka
raaja pukshe must be killed. he is an bloody heart less creature
Tamil nadu people living in Sri lanka should have the right to go back to Tamil nadu.
Sri-Lanka is the FOURTH MOST DANGEROUS place for the media.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists:
“Mahinda Rajapaksa has presided over a dark era of targeted media killings and complete law enforcement failure in addressing the crimes. All nine journalist murders in the past decade have gone unsolved, leaving persistent questions as to whether authorities have been complicit in some of the crimes.”
Lasantha Wickrematunge, who was a journalist and a fierce critic of the Rajapaksa regime, was brutally murdered in January 2009. He had been on Amnesty International’s endangered list since 1998, when anti-tank shells were fired on his house.
In July 2009 Mervyn Silva held a meeting where he publicly stated: “Lasantha Wickrematunge from the Leader paper went overboard. I took care of him.”
No one has been charged with Lasantha Wickrematunge’s murder so far!
In Sri-Lanka, perpetrators of political violence act with impunity.
Rajapaksa with Mervin
The ‘Amigos’!
Birds of the same kind flock together..
Thank you Ben, Thank you Channel four for being in our corner.
I am sure the Channel four documentary shamed a few countries into supporting the resolution. May the resolution will be the beginning of the end of the murderous regime of Sri Lanka
Channel 4 stop being the ultimate saviors and proponents of human rights.
While you point a finger at others remember you have four pointing towards you.
England colonised Sri Lanka for years and always treated Tamils favorably. Took all spices and resources and others from Sri Lanka. This is the same mentality that you still carry on.
I am a muslim from Sri Lanka you never carry any stories about thousands killed, maimed and displaced by LTTE. May be these are not humans and did not have human rights.
Further if Muslims can live with the Sinhalese I don’t why Tamils can’t live peacefully.
You continue to create problems in a country that is trying to move from decades all civil war. What kind of satisfaction do you get while harping on your definition of ‘human rights’ while you continue to ignore the thousands killed, raped and resources plundered from Sri Lanka by your ancestors . Shame on you and on the white race. Grow up and first look at what you did!
Because the Muslims who work with the government to kill the Tamils get money for there deeds.
And the other Muslims get killed also…
And Muslim is “only” a religion and not a culture…
…you see there are Tamil Muslims as well!
They are real thugs. The world has has now understood that why tamils took the gun in their hands. Tamils have been facing this since 1948, but by the name of the terrorism all state terrorism was covered.
Have come at last the true picture of Sri Lanka,
Thanks from our heart Channel 4.
I for one am glad that sri lanka is going to close down many useless embassies in western european capitals and instead open new embassies in Africa and South America. Sri Lanka should have done this a long long time ago. At least sri lanka will save some money and why have so many embassies in countries such as various western european countries who were supporting the LTTE tamil tigers all these years, thirty years to be exact, to kill, massacre and mutilate thousands of sri lankans? Am so glad this is happening.
How can a poor country such as sri lanka who has only four embassies in Africa and only two in South America convey its positive message against the greatest thug on the planet US’s barrage of arms twisting and threats against other poor countries to vote against sri lanka at the UNHCR and the western media’s blatant abuse of the freedom of the press to demonise sri lanka without any proof whatsoever and spreading blatant lies?
After urinating on dead Taliban and burning Qurans now the US preaches human rights at the human rights council. What a joke.
While you are at it why don’t you stop trading with the West as well and try and export to China, Russia, Pakistan and Iran.
Have the Sri Lankans forgotten that despite all the bravado the Rajapakse’s want to visit USA, have their kith and kin educated in USA and even lower themselves enough to beg for US citizenship. The main reason the ruling family didn’t want the resolution was because non compliance could have lead to travel ban especially to USA and Europe.
If Sri Lanka dosen’t have anything to hide why not let independent investigators in? The Western media personnel do not have to demonise Sri Lanka the ruling party politicians and their white vans are doing a great job of it.
I think sri lanka should walk out of the colonialist has been club the commonwealth. The bigwigs of the commonwealth the UK, Canada and Australia has been giving refuge to the LTTE for thirty years to kill, massacre and maim and bomb thousands of sri lankans and are now bullying sri lanka after committing such gross crimes. Sri lanka should, if they have any dignity bow out of the commonwealth and say sri lanka is not going to hold the next commonwealth meeting in colombo. At least sri lanka will save some money which is a good thing.
Whatever the LTTE did there is no excuse for the actions of the Sri Lankan military and governement who colluded to cover up the mass murder of the tens of thousands of civilians in the closing weeks of the Sri Lankan civil war. If the Sri Lankan government has nothing to hide why threaten journalists? Democratically elected governements should have a higher standard of behaviour than a dictatorship or a terrorist group. As long as there is a denial of justice to the civilians murdered by the Sri Lankan military and their families there can be no reconciliation or long lasting peace in Sri Lanka.
Why do most Sri Lankans have this idea that they can survive without the help of the West, USA and India? Most of China ‘Development projects’ are funded by loans taken from Chinese bank with high interest rates, while Sri Lanka trade with the West, USA and India. If the countries that sponsored the resolution and the countries that voted for the resolution enforced an embargo on Sri Lankan imports, Sri Lanka would become Chinese by default.
Channel4 if you have proof of any civilians being killed during the last stages of the sri lanka civil war please give the places, times and no of people killed. If you cannot you are abusing the freedom of the press by concocting up lies. There were some civilian casulaties and this was less than a thousand persons. Remember this includes those the LTTE tamil tigers shot dead when people tried to escape from them. All these have been investigated so far by the way.
channel 4 u suck

Nethaji Jinnan Subandriyo- Former Private secretary MP Colombo Sri Lanka.
Yeah yeah we want Tamil Eelam we cant stay with Sri Lanka government we have lerner past all we can’t live we want land Im living down London I don want go back bck Sri Lanka just like how it is now look back the Tamil tiger story they have fight for te true and die for freedom LTTE they are the real Heros
Sri Lanka doesn’t only oppress the Tamils but the Singhalese too… and alle military rapist, child abusers and murderer are among them…
They are their brothers, fathers and friends…. How can they live with these criminals in the neighbourhood or even in the same house?!!
Even Singhalese have to be afraid of the militarisation and the lawlessness of the country and the domination of the president-family…
I am shamed to be associated with Sri Lanka. There is an ever increasing need for a regime change.
Everyone in Tamilnadu and in India ashamed and shockened to see the channel iv videos. The srilankan government and the military heavily crossed their limits. Finally srilankan tamil peoples are helpless and uncontrollable.
Are we a democracy? Why do we Sri Lankans never stand up for injustice;the plunder and loot of the country’s resources, the lack of jobs, lack of development, stagnant economic growth and a standard of living so far below that of the growing economies in Asia, the non-existence of freedom of expression, the deafening silence of the Bar and the bias of the Bench, attacks, killings and incarceration of opposition party personnel, attack and killing of media personnel and destruction of their premises, attacks on NGO’s and aid agency staff? The war has been over for almost 03 years, but why is the defence budget bigger than ever and the armed forces being strenthened and their numbers increased? Our country is too small to be arming itself against a foreign power,so why?Is there a future for our children,in a country whose meagre resources have been plundered by the so-called patriots of our nation? Believe me, injustice has no race, colour, caste or creed, especialy when power is at stake!Ask yourselves, who would be next, now that there are no’tigers’;would it be the youth in our universities,Christians, Muslims, the private sector? The thought is mind-boggling! My heart bleeds for my…
sri lanka must reform!!!
first of all, the innocent Tamils and the Singhalese people should be protected.
Ref: Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished.
Thanks Channel 4 Team for this excellent program.
It is high time for the Sri Lankan government to accept that war crimes committed in 2009 and implement UN human rights council resolution March 2012.
Otherwise International community must impose economic sanctions and expel Sri Lanka from the Commonwealth.
Srilanka authorities are ashamed that the world will see futhermore damage and destruction
to tamil people caused by monkey faced “rajapakse” and co!!
It is clear thats the reason why they are taunting journalists who want to find out more.
…shame, shame RAJAPAKSE AND CO!!!
