The Foreign Office has said Sri Lanka must now give a serious response to “convincing evidence of violations of human rights”.

Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow joins the live blog to answer your questions ahead of tonight’s screening on Channel 4 of a hard-hitting investigation into the final weeks of the Sri Lankan civil war. It features devastating video evidence of horrific war crimes.
Melb Tamilians via Facebook says Channel 4 is leading the way in “positive journalism”. Would you agree it is grim but “positive” work?
Jon: I think that sums it up, Mel. But it is potentially uplifting too if we alert enough people to do something about it… or do something about the issues we’re raising. In this case the evidence of war crimes in Sri Lanka.
According to The Sun, Channel 4 head of current affairs Dorothy Byrne has “not” urged us to watch tonight because it is so “horrific”. Could it be too harrowing for some?
Jon: I think some people will find it too much, but sometimes our sensitivities are only taken to the point at which we ourselves respond, when overpowering images are in play.

Jon: Both we and the UN investigating panel have subjected the footage that we are using to forensic tests. The UN has declared the footage genuine and untampered with.

Jon: I think the horse has bolted on the cricket. Frankly, once you have had England playing a World Cup cricket match in Sri Lanka, there’s not much you can do when Sri Lanka come to play here. The fact is that as with the F1 Grand Prix in Bahrain, the cricket in Sri Lanka was used for propaganda purposes to suggest that life is normal.

Channel 4 News Foreign Editor Ben de Pear joins the live blog to answer questions about the continued investigation by his team into Sri Lanka war crimes allegations.
Ben, how did the investigation begin?
Ben: We started covering the end of Sri Lanka’s war in March 2009 when our Asia bureau of Nick Paton-Walsh, Matt Jasper, Nevine Mabro and Bessie Du were in the country for a number of weeks before being deported, after reporting allegations of abuses at resettlement camps.
So in effect, that’s when the investigation started.

Then what?
Ben: After being banned from the country, we sent other journalists from Channel 4 News, including Jonathan Miller, into Sri Lanka to investigate conditions for Tamils after the end of the war. Soon after Jonathan’s report came out, we were sent the first of a series of extremely graphic but compelling videos which purported to show serious war crimes.

The Sri Lankan government claimed the video was faked and made a series of formal complaints through the regulator Ofcom, all of which were rejected. Then the United Nations carried out a formal investigation into the video and claimed that to the best of its knowledge it was authentic.
Since then the Sri Lankan government has continued with its assertion that no civilians died at the end of the war. And we have continued to show videos and tell the stories of those who claim they witnessed tens of thousands of civilians dying in the final weeks. A UN special panel assembled by the Secretary-General wrote an extensive report citing our footage and scores of witnesses and thousands of photographs as credible proof of war crimes.
There is new footage being aired tonight in Killing Fields – what does it reveal?
Ben: Late last year Dorothy Byrne, head of current affairs at Channel 4, commissioned ITN Productions and the director Callum Macrae to make a special one-hour film. It’s an incredible piece of work.
Following the stories of three or four central characters and using all of the graphic video, it tells the story of the end of Sri Lanka’s war in a way that we cannot on the news, for reasons of taste and time limitations.

Ben: It depends on what the United Nations and the international community decide to do. The ball is now in Ban ki-moon’s court.

Ben: Hi Joe. We don’t purport to have solutions but we do report what we believe to have happened. There is no doubt that both sides were guilty of egregious crimes, not least the Tamil Tigers who pioneered the use of suicide bombers and child soldiers. However, many people including senior people in the UN have extensively questioned the methods of overwhelming force and extensive shelling of civilian areas used by the Sri Lankan armed forces.

thank you channel4. you are truly the greatest news station. you are bringing justice to the silenced graves of 40,000 dead tamil civilians. the srilankan government thought they can conduct a massacre by blocking all ngo and international media. but what they didnt know is that satellite and inside cellphone footages can still be leaked to the outside world. lets make more people watch this and ensure that the srilankan president/commander in chief Mahinda Rajapaksa and his dynesty of brothers in government are arrested by the International Criminal Courts! if we don’t do something then other regimes will commit similar massacres knowing that no one will do anything to punish the regime.
If the U.N. does nothing to bring the Sri Lankan government to justice for war crimes, then they may as well dismantle the U.N. They failed the Bosnians and many others caught up in war. The United Nations needs to start doing what it is they are paid to do and forget just giving hollow words.

Channel 4 Thank you. I watched it with tears flowing down my cheeks. This is not new in the history of Tamils in Srilanka. Tamils have been fighting for freedom, self determination since independence. There were several communal riots. Tamils faced killings, rapes, burnt alive with petrol (Hindu Priest) displacement etc. This needs to stop for good. This is GENOCIDE. Tamils need permanent safe haven. TAMIL EELAM is the only solution and International community should support fully to protect the Tamil race on this planet.

If your so called humane government wanted to liberate Tamils from terrorism then they should have flew to Prabhakarans house and shot him down like Obama did to Osama. Sure Prabakaran has killed many thousands of people and the government has every right to go after him. But the government should have investigated these incidents transparently without hiding them.
As for the executions and rape, it’s absolutely unacceptable and criminal. However, people must remember that most of them are done by soldiers who are going against orders and have taken matters to their own hands. They are undoubtedly criminals. But you cannot say that the government ordered it to be done. (except for the 2 leaders who were executed, they seem like government orders.)
As for the shelling of civilians, it could well have been done by tigers to discredit the army and to increase international pressure for intervention. That’s what happens when the tigers are trapped and desperate. Because the government gains nothing by shelling civilians, in fact it will hinder the progress of the war with international pressure for a ceasefire. We will probably never know who’s artillery it was…

The Americans did not rape tens of thousands of innicent people to kill osama. Most of the bombs in colombo was carried out by the srilankan government itself. i totally agree with you. as a sri lankan citizen i would like our government to probe into each and every incidents then the betrayers of our nation will come into light. its not just 2 sides of a coin. we should think about how everything went on. for my knowledge not a single incident was probed completely. our government just blame ltte and close the files. they should be punished for the killings they made in our country, but people who helped them also should be punished. if it happens i am dead sure that most of our ugly political heads will be cleared off from the government. and if it happens everything will be ok with our nation.

The war that occupied Sri Lanka was of a rather complex nature – you cannot simply point to one and claim that they are the reason for the war since that is merely spreading ignorant, stupid speculatives. Before the 30 year war even took place tamils were marginalised by the Singhalese and were refused access to higher education and many more matters we take for granted. Women were raped, children died. This is where the tamil tigers come in… they wanted to gain independence in order to rid these atrocities making their initial aim good. However, they picked up the gun and in the name of gaining independence, killed their own people, raped their women, used children to attach grenades on them… where is the justice in that? Now we have the Sri Lankan government – in the name of stopping terrorism they committed countless war crimes, raping their own women, tamil women bombing ceasefire zones and disallowing entry for the UN – if they had nothing to hide then why would they prevent them from coming in to investigate.The mere outcome from this political drama is that thousands of civilians dies of all ethnicities.Look into the eyes of child who lost his/her family, truth is there.

Those monks were killed by the srilankan Army. Why? Because “it’s a good news” to extend the emergency law. Everytime just before the emergency debate and vote in the SL Parliament, there will a bomb blast or some like that.
If LTTE had killed those monks, thay would have burnt the bodies. It was the SL army who did it, and after all they have killed more than 25,000 of their OWN PEOPLE and even RAPED MANY of their OWN WOMEN. So please don’t refer to the pictures that “SUDDENTLY APPEARED” on the defence website.
Tamils have tried to solve this issue non-violently in the beginning, and only when it failed they took arms. In over 30 years LTTE has NEVER raped a single Sihalese woman. LTTE were freedom fighters and they were the ones who were protecting the tamils in Srilanka.
Srilankan Government and the some of the Sinhalese people are the ones who should be blamed for the the rise of LTTE. So if you are looking for someone to blame, you should look into your own people, and not Channel 4.

I can understand that only one aim behind your decision to broadcast these images even though they are highly gruesome. That is to expose the true face of this genocide and crimes against humanity. I salute you for this impartial journalistic standards. Who ever has committed these crimes should face International law and the ICC.

This is to clarify and reply for the comments posted by few Sinhalese about the video being a fake and asking about the LTTE’s role:
Sinhalese have killed their OWN PEOPLE in the past. The SL Forces have killed more than 25,000 Sinhalese and raped their OWN WOMEN (in J.V.P times). And most of the Bombings in SL were carried out by the Government itself and blamed the tigers. The SL will not hesitate to kill their own for political and personal reasons. (They have even killed Buddhist monks to be blamed on the tigers). This could be the case of the suicide attack that was on this video.
For the Sinhalese the Tamils are Tigers – Tigers are Tamils, and this war has always been against the TAMILS and not the TIGERS. Since Srilanka gained Independence, Tamils have harassed, killed and women raped. There have been no arrests for the 1983 riots, even though there were very clear photos of the ones who committed it. Not a SINGLE ARREST. It is the way the SL works, and they have been VERY SUCCESSFUL. If this is allowed to continue, then other governments will follow. Libya has already tried it, and srilanka is it’s best friend. So it’s time to think U.N…

The first on the list (1990) massacre were unarmed surrendered policemen. Second were unarmed army personnel in a transit point. Third was a bus-load of civillians. Fourth was unarmed civillians.

What happened to more than 128,000 people who are missing or disappeared people who were in Vanni at the end of Vanni massacre? This figure is the variation between the government agent’s record of actual Vanni population prior to the massacre and the government record of people who were in barbed wire camps after May 2009.
If Sri Lanka and people of Sri Lanka wants to move towards a prosperous and harmonious future, there is ONLY ONE way, that is a free and fair International investigation to come out with the truth and justice. A government killing his own people can never be forgiven.
But where does this start from….oppression causing fear and hate. The amount of Tamils who have had to leave their homeland 30 years as there was no future there for them. I never even grew up in Sri Lanka but being a British Tamil even I feel displaced and robbed of a homeland. I took my English husband there on our honeymoon and fell in love with the country…but its not our country….and our ‘kind’ are being persecuted. Its genocide, its wrong where ever it takes place and it must be dealt with.
I would like to know what the international Tamil community can do pursued the UN to take action but also there should be some time of mourning and remembrance for all the deaths caused by this war. For me, today is a day of reflection and prayers for those people we all saw die on screen last night and God Bless to that.

Mainly the archbishop of Colombo, now the Cardinal, act as the brain to cover reality from Vatican. The bishops of North, East and Mannar of Sri Lanka were even labelled as Tigers mouthpiece for their statements. Even some christian fathers were excommunicated for raising voices against state crimes aftermath of War. The Sinhale speaking bishops visited firstly the concentrated camps-Vavunia, gave merit certificate while categorically denying the real situation which was later uncovered by Channel 4. There were ten catholic priests were disappeared during the final moments of war. Benedict XVI and Ban Ki-moon failed to do their job correctly but You did it today.

It is facinating that all you support the GOSL comes up with the same excuses, so let me try and clarify them to you.
1. Child Soldiers.
LTTE did have child soldiers in the beginning. It came to an end after Tamilchelvan’s fanstastic work to either release them or to move them to admin duties. The tamil children in Vanni had a choice of either become a child soldier or get killed/raped by the SL Army. So please don’t try to pretend to be the saviour of tamil children. The orphens of this war, spcially the tamil children are being abused by the SL Army even as I type this (to date).
2. Suicide Bombers.
They are also faced with the same issues as I’ve mentioned above. Tamil people in general are very Intelligent People, and no one would want to kill themself. So imagine what the SL Army would have done to them or their family for them to become one.
3. Bomb blasts in colombo and elsewhere
We all know that these bombings happen just before the parliament has a debate on the emergency law. I wonder why?

This is something that is going to only raise the tensions between the sinhalese and tamil communities even further. I am not doubting that there nothing ever took place in SL. If there were no war crimes as the Sri Lankan government claim, then they should invite the UN to prove that nothing took place. This constant denial and shunning of any evidence just leads to the overlying suspicion that crimes did take place. The first video shown in August 2009 was claimed to have been taken on a mobile phone and shows events that took place in January 2009. Now you are telling filmmaking was taken place in May 2009. So called VOT journalist Esipriya was identified as Dwarka, the daughter of the megalomaniac leader of the LTTE.
The Special Rapporteur, Mr Heyns concludes that the original film has taken by a video camera not by a mobile phone. If so you will lose your whole argument. Army personals do not have video camera but weapons! Even mobile phones are also not sophisticated to have any video editing capabilities. No need to talk about the optical zooming. There is no such mobile phone to date.

Hmm. I’m Sinhalese, and that was quite terrible to watch. It’s such a shame that the government of SL lacks the integrity to settle this once and for all with official apologies and deeds to allow the Tamil population to flourish once again. The war continued on for too long, and for a large part shouldn’t have happened in the first place. If only they’d actually listened to the Tamils in the first place, when Chelvanayagam was around.
Not sure when an honest politician will make it into the govt. (and successfully avoid assassination), but I wait for the day where we can finally put it all behind us, and everyone lives peacefully.

The Ban Ki Moon, Vijai Nambiyaar were the key figures in UN who created the ‘safe zone’ for the Sri Lankan Gov to carry out this. Vijai’s own brother was working with SL Army as an advisor that time. There should be corruption investigation about these top level UN officials.
As in Sri Lanka we in Ireland suffered a similar atrocity whereby the Army of the British state killed unarmed civilians on a day called ‘Bloody Sunday’ we the people of the city where this atrocity occurred, Derry, formed a successful campaign called the ‘Bloody Sunday Justice Campaign’ which culminated,after 40 years of cover ups and denial by the British government, in an apology by David Cameron, the British Prime Minister to the victims and the families and a recognition of all the aforementioned that this ALL did happened…I would suggest a similar campaign for the Tamil people to expose these war crimes. Your expose on Channel4 of the atrocities carried out in Sri Lanka was…shocking and clearly brings into question the role of the UN in international conflicts. What on earth has happened to humanity? In war times we expect casualties but to bomb hospitals intentionally is truly unforgivable. Whilst I agree with your sentiments, boycotting Sri Lanka doesn’t really help anyone – tourism is the biggest industry there, and if we lose the income then I don’t see how the govt. will be able to justify giving any sort of funding towards the rehousing/resettling of the Tamil victims.
By boycotting the country, you punish both the Tamils and Sinhalese people. The latter are becoming increasingly disenchanted with the Rajapaksa dynasty in any case. The way forward is for the international community to get in there, sanction both parties (Govt. and LTTE) for the atrocious war crimes committed, and then set measures in place for a new, honest govt. which will take into account the hearts and minds of both ethnicities. Any differential treatment of either side will kick off a similar conflict in days to come.
Jon and CH4, Your documentary has saddened me. What also saddened me was to this seperation of communities in parts of Sri-Lanka from the rest of the country. Also your documentary said nothing about the great of work NGOS (involving all Sri-Lankans) and volunteers working with refugees and supporting them.
If GOSL/SLA and the Tigers have done this then they should be brought to account. Unfortunately this documentary will be used by ethnic nationalist and seperatist elements of the Disapora to push their political agenda.
What wlll be forgotton are those Sri-Lankans living in the North and East who need support to get on with their lives? We need real political settlement in Sri-Lanka that gives everyone a stake in their country, be they Tamil, Sinhala, Muslim, whoever. However i urge any moderate people to read more about the `Friday Forum’ and their submission to the Lessons Learned commission and the work of Sri-Lanka Unites. Where is your proof? I would like to examine it, since I’m on the fence about who shelled what. As for the videos though, I think that’s fairly obvious as to who did it – those were Sinhalese men, I am ashamed to say.
Also, in terms of accuracy – more Tamils died than Sinhalese. That’s a cold hard fact about the war. I’m not attributing causes, because I don’t know who was responsible, but their losses were greater than ours.
I agree though, the programme was too one-sided. They failed to acknowledge the extent to which the LTTE turned its back on its own people and committed war crimes. But, the fact remains that they are a terrorist organisation. The Govt., in its place of authority, should look to be setting a moral precedent for others to follow.

Unfortunately the tigers started killing hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians during the ceasefire. Killing Tamils and then making the dead body naked is very cruel Sri Lankan culture. Since British left the amalgamated Island, Tamils were not only raped, tortured and killed, but also very consistently their dead bodies made naked and paraded. For all those who are talking about the atrocities of the LTTE no one is justifying what they did, but the journalist at Channel 4 have clearly stated that a full independent investigation investigating both sides needs to be carried out on what happened towards the end of the conflict.
In doing so, all war crimes whether it is executions, deliberate targeting of civilians or using civilians as human shields can be established.
I ask all Sri Lankan’s is cold blooded murder whether from a Sinhalese or Tamil a crime regardless? If this is the case we as Sri Lankan’s should push for an international investigation and stand against those on both sides who wish to hide away from the truth.
We cannot forget that on both sides the bloodshed has not only occurred between Tamil and Sinhalese but also Tamil against Tamil and Sinhalese against Sinhalese. Many of which have been orchestrated by the leaders of both communities.

As a Tamil living in Sri Lanka I feel very sorry towards the misleading of the international community carried on by Channel 4 by this documentary.
Can you elaborate further please? Why was it misleading? I’m a Sinhalese person living in England trying to find some truth out of all this chaos.
Ranganathan stated the documentary to be misleading due to it presenting merely one side of the story – yet, before I elaborate any further it must be noted that this one side is all true – the Sri Lankan government did in fact rape tamil women, kill children and bomb ceasefire locations such as hospitals and schools. Now flip side of the story that was not mentioned extensively were the atrocities committed by the LTTE – they too raped singhalese, muslim and even their own women, killing children and bombed ceasefire locations as well. See this war was complex, thus for the simple and narrow minded will be hard to comprehend – before the war even took place tamils were marginalised by the singhalese, women raped, children killed, lack of access to higher education etc – LTTE wanted to stop this thus wanted independence making their initial aim acceptable yet they picked up the gun and killed brutally losing their humane trait of love and mercy. Then the Sri Lankan govt in the name of defeating terrorism committed war crimes beyond conceivable imagination…only outcome was that thousands of civilians died… violence will never be the answer when will people learn that?:(

The UN report states that tens of thousands of lives were lost in the final days of the war, and indicts the Sri Lankan government for the way it conducted the war. An important paragraph that would strengthen charges of genocidal intent of the Sri Lankan government, reads thus: “Most civilian casualties in the final phases of the war were caused by Government shelling. The Government systematically shelled hospitals on the frontlines…(and) deprived people in the conflict zone of humanitarian aid in the form of food and medical supplies, particularly surgical supplies, adding to their suffering. To this end, it purposefully underestimated the number of civilians who remained in the conflict zone.”

We (UN, Human rights group, civilized nations) should look into other horrific crimes that have been committed in these days of age, such as congo, Syria, Bahrain, Libya, kurds in turkey and etc.
Western Government and the UN should not turn a blind eye in to genocide or war crimes, specialy if its not in their interest.
My father worked for the UN, he was a diplomat, over 20 years in the middle east and Africa. My father was a UN diplomat for over 20 years, stationed in Africa and middle east; he had always wished that the UN wer more active in humanitarian assistance than in politics.

Watching this brought tears to my eyes. The UN is a joke along with all European governments. They send troops into Bosnia and Libya and talk about genocide but what about Sri Lanka. It is obvious that the governments policy was to herd civilians into areas and then bomb them. No different to the Nazi concentration camps. I doubt anything will be done, just like Syria the Sri Lankan government is a “friend ” of the west. this footage is bias. four expertise from america has said that the footage is fake. there are bits where the soldiers are wearing rubber slippers, the soldiers did not wear rubber slippers. ltte is known to make fake videos. there are videos of ltte training children to shoot and teaching women how to act dead and injured. how come these footage haven’t being showed?
the video is only one sided, they did not show the crimes ltte committed. they also bombed hospitals and prevented innocent tamils form escaping. the ltte raped both innocent sinhalese and tamil girls, how come channel four explain those events to people. sri lankan gov tried to end 30 years of terrorism, they only killed terrorist. if sir lanka is going to be questioned about killing of ltte leader and other terrorist, then surely obama should be questioned about the war in iraq and the killing of osama.

A powerful and important film and one I think that further shows how the Sri Lankan people are manipulated by the ruling classes, whether Tamil or Sinhla. Having lived in Sri Lanka there is an undeniable desire from some quarters to assert Sri Lanka as a Budhist Sinhala state; a motivation that this film graphically demonstrated. However, most in Sri Lanka desire a normal, safe existence, free for fear and oppression. Undoubtably crimes were committed by both sides but the international community/UN willingness to ignore these state inflicted relaties is disgraceful and cannot go on. Taking away the cause of terrorism has proven to be the only way forward, which in context means equal rights for all of Sri Lanka’s oppressed. But the effort that you have taken to bring to the world the evidence of war crimes and probably genocide is simply sensational. You have shown the world how journalism should work and what the ultimate motive should bee – to the betterment of the world. (and not gossip on celebreties).

After all, the sinhalese have killed more than 25,000 of their own people and raped many of their own women (in J.V.P times). May be you should have asked the J.VP to “share the country or go to hell”. The government of Srilanka is responsible for many of the bombings in colombo and elsewhere in the country, so that they can blame it on the LTTE.

This is for all those apologists for the government of Srilanka. This program aired evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity carried out by a government against its citizens. No one is denying the fact that LTTE were also guilty in the way it conducted its campaign, That does not absolve the government from its duty to protect its citizens and accusations of genocide. The duty and the standard expected from a government and its agents are different from that expected from an organization fighting the government. One group’s criminal acts are no excuse for the government to conduct its war contrary to international law. That is the crux of this documentary. So to all those who are asking the question, What about the LTTE? I say this. The government of Srilanka is on your side, please present the evidence.
Horrific, heart=wrenching and grotesque, this is what lif is like for many tamils living in their own country ruled by a murderous regime. The Tigers may be guilty of many things, but this can NEVER justify the mental and physical torture and abuse the GoSL meted out to innoncent, defenceless Tamil civilians. The sexual abuse of women at the hands of the SLA was painful to watch, but this would not’ve been the first time they have been guilty of this. I was too depressed after watching this programme last night to comment but went to bed determined to do so today. I lost my father in January 2009 and clearly my own grief made me oblivous to what was going on around the world. Most human beings are the most amazing creatures but some given just a little nudge can carry out the most evil actions. I would be horrified to think Channel 4 would perpetuate a hoaks of this magnitude which means the continual denials by the Sri Lanka government are heinous and serious offences against the Sri Lankan people. I consider myself a decent human being but what I saw made me ashamed of my species.

I too found the programme too disturbing to react straight away. I have nothing but tears to offer those who have died in such a brutal manner. I don’t need to know who is to blame, only that innocents clearly have paid the price of man’s inhumanity to man with their lives.
If the comments on this board are anything to go by there seems little hope for reconciliation, but that is what must happen. The role of the UN is not to take sides but to establish truth and then reconciliation. Reconciliation should reflect the rights of people on ‘both sides’, because ultimately we are all on the same side. If the UN secretary general has no authority to act, what is his use ?
Everyone should write to their MP urging our government to stand up in the UN and demand that a proper process to establish truth and reconcile the people of Sri Lanka.
Don’t forget to add that no-one should be returned to that country against their will having fled it in fear.
We just don’t know how lucky we are living in this country.

It was gruesome and horrifying to watch and I managed to watch it in between changing channels. But doesn’t every war carry human rights violations and the very reason why so many of us are against any war! No matter who is fighting, defending or supporting it is always the innocent civilians that get caught up in the middle, always helpless with nowhere to turn to. There must be a stop to any war anywhere in the world.
I agree civilians always get caught in the middle. However there is a difference between genocide and war. If the government were only keen to capture Prabhakaran and the tamil tigers why were they targeting hospitals? Why were they allowing rape of young girls? Why were they hiding the truth and not letting reporters in the no fire zone/anywhere at all. They had something to hide and that was the fact that they disliked INNOCENT tamil people, even little kids, and wanted them dead.

To give an idea of the truly horrific nature of the tamil tiger terrorists or LTTE and especially its leadership, I am recalling the tamil tiger attack against the srilanka army camp at mullaitivu in 1996.
During the battle in 1996 at least 1,200 srilankan army soldiers were killed by the tamil tigers. At least 207 srilankan soldiers who had surrendered to the LTTE or tamil tigers were executed with hundreds of sri-lankan army soldiers herded together, doused with gasoline, and burned alive. Burned alive! This is how sri-lankan army soldiers were massacred by the LTTE terrorists and this happened in 1996.

This is just one atrocity amongst the many thousands of atrocities committed by the LTTE in thirty years of war. Sadly nobody knows about these atrocities committed by the LTTE. Truly shameful.
Today the very same supporters of the LTTE who bankrolled such atrocities are producing suspect programmes about alleged atrocities committed by the sri-lankan army which are highly suspicious given their support of such terrible atrocities committed by the LTTE terrorists for thirty long years.

Today Sri-Lankans of all ethnicities and religions are living in peace, a peace that the likes of mean minded and jealous channel4 would like to shatter with suspect programmes. I feel so strongly about this, we must highlight this crime against humanity.
I believe last night’s programme is biased. The programme repeatedly mentioned the government shelling of hospitals and confirmed that this is a war crime unless there is evidence that the opposition was carrying out military activity within the hospital.
By keeping quiet about any opposition military activity in the hospitals the broadcast is therefore implying that a war crime had definitely occurred.
However, the UN report which the broadcast referred to states that the LTTE “fired from, or stored military equipment near, IDPs or civilian installations such as hospitals”.
The programme is not impartial and far from solely reporting crimes against humanity (sinhalese AND tamils), would appear to have a hidden agenda.
The programme would have been far better served to report EQUALLY the atrocities carried out by both parties.
Also the atrocities against innocent civilians (both sinhalese and tamils) has been going on for the last 3 decades so why have these been ignored?.

it showed the conflict as if it was black and white i dont think it was as clear as that, there was no context no emphasis that this was a civil war that had stretched on for decades with atrocities from the tigers as well
secondly im not sure how valid the allegation that sl was targeting medical facilities was, i mean it was kind of sketchy with what one or two witnesses and some kind of animation, surely there should be some hard evidence like serialised shells or satelite imagery

It’s sad that when Tamils protested in 2009 nobody took notice and ignored them. This was evidently ethnic cleansing. Channel 4 have been the only ones to recognize this now. It’s sad that 40,000 people had to die when these lives could have been saved if the UN had interfered earlier. They should learn from this mistake and open their eyes to make sure this does not happen again. It is no longer an issue of Sinhalese vs. Tamils. We know what’s happened these past 30 years. We know there are faults on both sides, it takes two sides to start a war. Channel 4 only focused on the last few months of the war. I am someone of Tamil origin and know the LTTE to be blood-thirsty tyrannical organisation intent on satifying their own agenda for violence and blood lust.
However the LTTE came into being because of desperation. The desperation that came from decades of oppression. Tamils were were marginalised, prevented from entering universities, kept out of top jobs in society and in government. In these circumstances when diplomacy fails what would any one of us do. For petes sake there were violent riots over the poll tax in this country.
The Srilankan government and the SLA have been shown before the world to be cruel and callous and if their actions in shelling hospitals and herding Tamils into confined areas for slaughter doesn’t constitute genocide, I don’t know what does.
The UN as always are limp, flaccid and soulless. They have been instilled with our faith and money and once agained failed to act against cruel governments and oppressive regimes. Rwanda, Bosnia, Srilanka… How many times must this happen before the world decides to screw political and monetary gains and act on morality and humanity. Justice is what we seek but before that the world should have protected.
Additionally though I hold very little hope for justice being served and retribution for the Sri-Lankan Tamil people. If there is any justice in this world Rajapaksa will one day be found guilty of the atrocities in Srilanka and hang by his fat neck.
Despite being of Sri-Lankan Tamil origin I am thankful to call myself English and British, despite the many flaws of this country. A country that validates my rights as an equal with equal rights to opportunities and care.

Everytime just before the Parliament debate of the emergency law, there will be sinhalese killed. Always just before the parliament debate and vote on it. Because it helps to extend the emergency law easily and will satisfy the sinhalese as well. In reality the LTTE is responsible for only a few attacks on the civilians, like the central bank attack.
You could ask me how could they kill their own people. Well, the Sinhalese were killed and raped sinhalese during the J.V.P times. So please do not try to provide links that show photos of victims who were killed by the Sinhalese themselfs and blamed on the LTTE.

As someone who was born Jaffna in 1966, moved to the UK early in my life, I am left dumb struck, unable to sleep and think coherently. I am struck for words that people assume that the army is always on the side of the just. They are led by an uneducated autocrat who has his family casting its claws into every aspect of life. I have always known through my experiences the effects of these two races living on the same piece of land. History before the colonial rule was separate Kingdoms. I am not saying both sides in the conflict are untarnished, but the brutality of raping, pillaging, murdering and then treating the bodies of women, children by these thugs of the Sri lankan army is beyond contemplation. I pray and I hope that hope which we could not give them in life will be given to those that survived, and the memory of those that have been abused and murdered will be remembered. If the UN does nothing to bring the so called President and his cronies to book for crimes against humanity, we will be entering the age of darkness. Perhaps we have already.

We know the Tigers were monsters. They regularly kidnapped and brutalised young children, turning them into vicious guerrilla fighters and they actually *pioneered* suicide bombings against civilian targets, using women and children
Channel 4 didn’t ignore the horror of the LTTE. It mentioned their atrocities but didn’t focus on them particularly because this documentary was about the excesses of the Sri-Lankan *state military*, under orders by an internationally recognised government, and so *requiring* exposure, international attention and justice
We need to bear in mind that this wasn’t about ordinary Tamils and Sinhalese being at each other’s throats and that the LTTE weren’t ‘fighting the Good Fight’

Here sinhalese tamils and muslims live peacefully now. no bombblasts. no fear. i’m tamil and my two little girls go to local schools and growing up with sinhala kids. i never wanted to ruin their lives by telling stories about hatred. Why are you bringing in the Libya, Bin Laden, LTTE etc. Regarding legitimacy for Tamils to ask for safe haven Tamil Eelam, you need to do some home work. Is there anything common between Tamils & Sinhala people? The culture, language, religion, clothing, food & lifestyle everything is different. Tamils & Singhalese are two different races and had been living with well defined historical land demarcation.

I count myself lucky that my parents moved here and gave me the opportunity for fair education and a life of peace. I attended protests to give those suffering a voice. We care. The whereabouts of the remaining 100,000 are still not known except that a large number of people picked up in white vans simply disappeared without a trace.

Have ever channel 4 investigated how many people were killed for more than 3 decades by the Tamil Tigers. Have they ever investigated war crimes in Iraq. When a small country like Sri Lanka is trying to get up organizations like channel 4 always like to come up with so many things to get cheep publicity as they don’t have the spine to finger in to the bigger & stronger issues involved with powerful nations. Frankly no one can denied the fact that crime have happen in the war zone. Yes there can be many & it is not right, but when you start a war these things are part of it no one can stop them. If any civilians were killed by SL army then that is collateral damage ,not intentional . But all the civilians killed by LTTE in the last 30 years were 100% intentional .
