We’ve already received a range of comments about several of these programmes – We Are Together showing first-time director Paul Taylor’s experience as a volunteer in South Africa at an Agape orphanage received some very warm praise from viewers, as did Comedy Lab’s School of Comedy, which producer Laura Lawson described as “Like Bugsy Malone, but better.”

Three Minute Wonder is a regular slot for new talent, and August saw 15 new faces contribute to the Bright Young Wonder slots, including one contributor who was brave enough to take on the British love of dogs single handedly! In the First Cut documentary series, Anoop Pandhal’s debut film Billie Joe Jenkins: Sion’s story attracted some criticism for the camerawork, while Sally Hewitt’s directorial debut film Time Warp Wives was obviously enjoyed by the viewers who wrote in describing it as “fantastic” and “fascinating”.

Promoting and showcasing new talent featured strongly in Next on 4, the blueprint for the future published by Channel 4 earlier in the year, and you don’t have to look far amongst the established stars of British television and film to find people who had their first break on Channel 4. So did you spot any stars of the future on your screen during August? Anyone you’d like to single out for particular praise or criticism? Let me know and I’ll make sure the commissioners hear what you have to say.

Walking around Horseferry Road this week, it’s been hard to avoid bumping into people carrying chairs, podiums, clipboards and boxes of newly printed documents as the whole of Channel 4 seemingly prepares itself for a major launch of its blueprint for the future – Next on 4.

Don’t worry, I won’t attempt to repeat the hour-long presentation from Channel 4 chief executive Andy Duncan (pictured), or attempt to summarise the 100-page full report – though if you are interested, both are available on the Next on 4 website in easily-digestible chunks.

The event itself attracted an audience made up mainly of parliamentarians and policy makers from various government departments and think tanks, but was also streamed live online for Channel 4 viewers.

Below is an 11-minute excerpt from Andy Duncan’s speech, to give you a taste of what went on.

I’m interested in hearing your feedback on some of Next on 4’s key proposals.

Do you agree that Channel 4 deserves public support and should continue to receive some sort of subsidy?

Do you agree with the plan to make more original programmes for 10- to 15-year-olds? Whether you’re a teenager or a parent, what sort of programmes would you like to see more of?

Is Channel 4’s commitment to produce 200 or so new documentaries a year a significant one?

Do you expect to see more Channel 4 content and programmes online? What sort of things would you like to see?

Is there anything else in the proposals that you strongly agree or disagree with?

Please leave your comments below.
