Amanda Holden’s recent appearance on Alan Carr: Chatty Man provoked a number of comments from viewers last week, many of whom were unhappy with Amanda and Alan’s remarks about Britain’s Got Talent contestant Susan Boyle. With that in mind – and following news that a second series of Chatty Man will be broadcast from November – The TV Show invited commissioning editor Syeda Irtizaali to share her thoughts on the recently concluded series one.

I couldn’t be more pleased with the first series of Alan Carr: Chatty Man. I wanted viewers to end their weekend with a bit of fun and entertainment before going back to work or school and I think we’ve succeeded in doing that. We’ve had really great guests, fantastic band performances and an awful lot of fun making it. We were keen to create a chat show that reflected Alan’s personality and warmth and would make guests feel welcome so they could have a laugh and muck about.

Alan has quickly grown into a consummate, engaging and extremely funny chat show host over the series successfully making his guests feel at ease whilst able to conduct some revealing interviews from the likes of Jonathan Ross, Samuel L Jackson, David Walliams, Gok Wan and Black Eyed Peas. We’re not sure whether it was the globe of old-school drinks or the 70s décor, but we’ve already had our guests take part in some classic moments: Peter Andre dancing with Stavros Flatley; Dawn French snogging Alan; Mickey Rourke wrestling our host while wearing big heart shaped sunglasses; Martina Navratilova playing Swingball to name a few.

The response from viewers has been overwhelmingly positive with more than 30,000 viewers interacting directly with the show (@chattyman) on Twitter. Even the most complained about skit garnered a similar amount of positive comments and we always appreciate hearing viewers’ thoughts whether they’re good and bad. The tone of the show is always good-natured and affectionate and will continue to be so when series 2 returns in November with some very exciting guests…

Joining Krishnan in the first half of the show was Channel 4’s head of entertainment and comedy, Andrew Newman. Krishnan asked the studio whether they thought it was right for Britain’s Got the Pop Factor… to “poke fun” at people in wheelchairs, people with dwarfism and transsexuals, just to get a laugh. Watch the video to find out what they had to say.

Also on the show this month were Natasha Wightman and Mick Trueman, stars of Jamie’s Ministry of Food, and executive producer of the series Dan Reed. Find out what they think about the ‘Pass It On’ campaign and see what they had to say in response to the questions put to them.

As always, some members of the studio audience took the chance to share their views after Saturday’s show by recording backstage their viewer videos – keep an eye on the site over the coming week to see what they had to say.

Krishnan will be will be putting this question to Channel 4 and The TV Show’s live studio audience this Saturday (November 1), and would like to know what you think.

Peter Kay’s Britain’s Got the Pop Factor… attracted Channel 4’s biggest audience of 2008 but, despite these huge ratings, a number of viewers contacted the channel to tell us that they found the programme offensive.

Earlier this year, high profile comedy shows including The Secret Policeman’s Ball, Ricky Gervais: Fame, Russell Brand Live, The Kevin Bishop Show and 8 Out of 10 Cats – all of which received much praise from viewers – also generated some complaints from people who perceived their content to be in bad taste.

Do you have an opinion on this subject? Were you offended by the content of these comedy shows, or did you find them funny? Do you think that modern comedy relies too heavily on “bad taste” to achieve laughs, or is there space on our television screens for intelligent and thoughtful humour?

November’s edition of The TV Show will also be reflecting on Jamie’s Ministry of Food – the recently concluded series that aimed to get more people cooking at home, inspire healthy eating and help to tackle the country’s increasing problem of obesity.

Do you think the series was a success? Did Jamie inspire healthy eating as he set out to do, or did his frequent strong language detract from the message behind the campaign? Did Jamie’s Ministry of Food portray the northern town of Rotherham fairly?

The TV Show blog has already received a number of heartfelt comments on the subject, so we’re looking forward to a lively debate on-air.

Please leave your comments below if you’d like to join in the online debate – alternatively, visit our Take Part section to find out how you can contribute directly to The TV Show as part of our live studio audience.

We’ve already received a range of comments about several of these programmes – We Are Together showing first-time director Paul Taylor’s experience as a volunteer in South Africa at an Agape orphanage received some very warm praise from viewers, as did Comedy Lab’s School of Comedy, which producer Laura Lawson described as “Like Bugsy Malone, but better.”

Three Minute Wonder is a regular slot for new talent, and August saw 15 new faces contribute to the Bright Young Wonder slots, including one contributor who was brave enough to take on the British love of dogs single handedly! In the First Cut documentary series, Anoop Pandhal’s debut film Billie Joe Jenkins: Sion’s story attracted some criticism for the camerawork, while Sally Hewitt’s directorial debut film Time Warp Wives was obviously enjoyed by the viewers who wrote in describing it as “fantastic” and “fascinating”.

Promoting and showcasing new talent featured strongly in Next on 4, the blueprint for the future published by Channel 4 earlier in the year, and you don’t have to look far amongst the established stars of British television and film to find people who had their first break on Channel 4. So did you spot any stars of the future on your screen during August? Anyone you’d like to single out for particular praise or criticism? Let me know and I’ll make sure the commissioners hear what you have to say.

In their opinion, the recent editing of an episode removed too much material, making the storyline hard to follow. One viewer was particularly confused that some of the material removed from an E4 version of Scrubs, was kept in on the pre-watershed version shown on the Paramount Comedy channel.

My quest to find out more took me to the editorial team for acquisitions. They explained that Channel 4, like all broadcasters, is bound by the rules and regulations of Ofcom. However the policy for language and other content for pre-watershed shows is stricter for channels such as E4 and More4, because they, unlike Paramount Comedy (which is a subscription-only channel), are available free on the Freeview platform.

Free-to-air channels are, potentially, available to a broader audience during the day, including younger people, so sensitive material and content deemed inappropriate for under 15s must be removed from US shows such as Scrubs and The Simpsons. That said, the team are committed to maintaining as much of the narrative of the show as possible.

This is rarely an issue with new series. US acquisitions usually have their first showing in post-watershed slot. So, when Scrubs Series 7 airs later this spring, expect it to be shown later when the content does not need the same editing as repeats. The second showing tends to be earlier in the day – these timeslots attract the best audience, but may include youngsters so requires a pre-watershed version.

The more we talked, the more it became clear that editing TV shows is a bit of an art form. It’s a matter of balancing the timeslot, the likely audience (this also depends on the day of the week, school holidays etc), the public mood about different issues, with the importance of maintaining the storyline.

In the future, the matter may be further confused as it becomes increasingly common to watch programmes on-demand – either recorded on personal/digital video recorders or through online services such as 4oD, which could also be accessed by children. As long as Channel 4 continues to transmit programmes in a linear fashion, however, the broadcasting regulations mean that shows need to be edited for broadcasts before the watershed.

What is your view of programme editing? Do you think the industry needs to rethink this as we change our viewing habits?
