The new Countdown!

Well, what a huge reaction we have had to the relaunch of Countdown! We know how much the show means to its viewers but we’ve been blown away by the massive response from you all.

Des and Carol were always going to be a very hard act to follow but we think Jeff and Rachel are settling in brilliantly. Jeff has a natural warmth, coupled with a fierce intelligence which seems to fit perfectly with the show – and he has brought with him an army of fans from his Soccer Saturday show on Sky. After every recording, the long queue of audience members requesting his autograph is testament to how popular he is. Some viewers have complained that he talks about sport too much, so Jeff is trying very hard to limit his footie references!

Rachel is going from strength to strength and we are delighted to have found such an incredible talent. Despite never having set foot in a TV studio before, she has lost her early nerves and is now solving the most incredible sums with ease. She really is a maths genius and the proportion of men watching the show has noticeably increased – we’re not sure if this is down to Jeff or Rachel! Rachel’s high heels attracted a great deal of interest at the beginning, with many viewers commenting that they adversely affected her posture. The truth is that Rachel only saw herself on TV for the first time after having recorded six weeks’ worth of shows! Having seen herself, she swapped the sky-high heels for some lower ones and her posture has definitely improved as a result.

The biggest complaint by far has been that we don’t put the words up on the board enough. Again, by the time we realised how important this was to viewers, we had recorded several weeks’ worth of shows. But we have now addressed the issue and I hope those who rang us to ask that we start putting them up again will feel that we have listened to your views and taken action.

Overall, the response to the relaunch has been tremendously positive, with viewers particularly enjoying the fact that the game itself has now taken centre stage. Some viewers still miss Des’s showbiz stories and Carol’s glamour and charisma – which is completely understandable as they are both great TV talents – but we hope that viewers will agree that having new presenters is a better option than losing the show altogether.

Countdown is now in its 27th year and we are so pleased to have it on Channel 4. Now that things are settling down again after such a tumultuous year, we can look forward to enjoying it for many years to come.

On behalf of the Countdown team, I’d like to say thankyou to everyone who has contacted us to share their thoughts – we always appreciate feedback from our viewers, so please leave your comments below if there’s anything more you’d like to say…

I have watched Countdown for many years and do agree that Rachel is an attractive and bright young lady. Why does she have to do such a stylised pronunciation of S, F and X ie “eessi”, “effi” and Exxi”? She did not do this to begin with and it is most irritating. May have to give up watching.

I totally agree – the ella, enna, emma etc. are not consonant names and are immature and discriminate against viewers with hearing and visual impairment, not to mention the effect on much younger viewers who need to imitate correct letter names and not copycat these silly interpretations.

I agree, I am thinking of giving up too! Her voice actually grates on me and makes me wince. I have started to turn the TV down when she is about to speak. Jeff is brilliant and so is Suzy, if it weren’t for them I would have turned off already.

I notice that Susie got Rachel off on a ‘technicality’ when viewers queries her use of “times it by” instead of multiplied. Apparently it was used like that in Chaucer’s time. I am not one who believes language should be static. It is a wonderful fluid language. My problem with “timese it” is that for me it just sounds ugly. Of course, Rachel could be consistent and say “plus it” and “minus it” instead of “add it” ot “take it away.” Only joking.

If I sound like I am whingeing, let me balance it by saying that I am enjoying the new look Countdown. Even Jeff. And especially Rachel.

I have to disagree with this comment – it is merely Jeffs Humour, and Rachel now gives as good as she gets.

I have to say that I have always been a big fan of Countdown, but after the late Richard died, it lost its way.

Its a pity that Jeff was not around to take over, as now he is in charge, its as good as when Richard was there.

Jeff is the best presenter since Richard, and I also have to say I watch him on his other show Gillette Saturday and I for one dont mind him commenting on football as like has already been commented on, Des O’Connor spoke about his showbiz career, so why shouldn’t Jeff talk about his passion?

I think he is the best thing to happen to Countdown and being totally handsome is an added bonus!

      He’s great!

My 2 year old Adam loves countdown!!! He dances to the music and every clock he sees is a “countdown” clock.
We also have to sky plus it so he can watch it as soon as he wakes up!!!

He now knows all the letter names and the numbers including 25,50 etc all at the tender age of two and this, i think is down to his love of countdown.

My only critisism as a parent is now whenever he sees numbers he reads them from right to left so instead of 1, 2, 3 he says 3, 2, 1 and when i try to correct him he says ” no mummy countdown way”.

So i was wondering if there was a reason you did this with the numbers round as i know it has been like this from day 1?

    Thanks for reading

I think she puts the letters up perfectly well! I’m very happy that Susie Dent is still with us. I was also pleased to see Doctor Phil again last week – I love his humour. My only disappointment with the new series is Jeff. I adored Richard Whitely, loved Des Lynam, barely tolerated Des O’Connor, but Ray and his cheesy grin leave me wanting someone else. I got all over-excited when I read that Alexander Armstrong was a possibility. A ‘guest presenter’ one a one-month (or longer) basis would be a great idea – with Tom O’Connor as number one on my list! Here’s wishing and hoping.

I also find Rachel pronounciation of F,L,M,N,S and X extremely irritating, adding the extra sound effect of an “er” at the end of each letter. I Like the new set (far better than that pink one) and the presenters doing a fair job. The personality & banter is there between them, however, I am with you all about Rachel’s pronunciation of some of the letters ( that annoying ‘-yuh’ sound, plonked on the end of some of the letters).
Also with the numbers round, she picks up the cards, and then holds them to herself the wrong way, failing to conceal them properly, thus allowing us to see the last number that she picked up, as opposed to the countdown logo on the back of the cards. Saying that, she still is doing a great job, and is overall proving a good replacement for Carol. It’s still early days for them!

I note that current viewing figures are down to 650,000, half what they were when Carol ruled. I think its goodbye Countdown. Bert Arter, Norfolk

Rachel is doing really, really well and has won the audience over by quietly getting on with the job. Those who complain that she can’t do the maths clearly don’t watch the programme regularly – she’s brilliant! She has endured some fairly hostile criticism from a small minority with great dignity and grace for someone so young and we are delighted to have such a lovely girl on the team.
Similarly, I’m afraid I can’t be convinced that Jeff is anything other than perfect for the role. He is a true gentleman both on and off screen and the fact that he, Rachel and Susie often socialise together after recordings is a testament to how well they have all bonded.

Does anyone know how to contact Susie and ask her if her dictionary contains the word “times” as a verb? If not, such a “bloomer” should not be allowed on a show which is very particular about words and how they are used.

Tthe show still tecahes literracy and numeracy and is a boon to anyone learning English and this has been acknoweldged in the House of Commons on several occasions so long may the show continue. If Ch4 ever mistakenly ditches it, I am sure BBC2 would grab it for their late afternoon schedules!

I Rachel is a very attractive girl but her clothes are completely unsuitable. Her recent dresses have been of the sort usually favoured by the fake-tanned straightened-hair brigade on Saturday nights. However good her legs might be it would be more appropriate for her to cover them rather than adorn them with a pelmet. She looks tarty, and considering her many failures at the numbers game she gives the impression of being rather dim. I now watch the show on 4OD so I can minimise my exposure to her and the oleaginous Jeff.

It is her high screechy voice I cannot tolerate,
she is a young, pretty girl but when she opens her mouth it’s like fingernails on a blackboard. I thought she would have been given some guidance about it by now. I can’t be the only one affected by it, can I? So it looks as if it’s bye bye countdown again.

I think Countdown is being spoiled by the horrendous selection of letters turning up. Nowadays, it is quite common for three of the same letter to appear, combined two or three of another. I especially enjoy those occasions when Richard Digence and Jo Brand are in Dictionary Corner.

Jeff, if this is what you want, you are in the wrong job, you seem to be encouraging her to dress like a tart. It seems from our viewing, she does’nt need much encouragement anyway.

Susie Dent and her Dictionary Corner should be axed and she should revert to her previous job of just commenting on the words found by the contestants.Jeff is ok, as is Rachel, although very gauche and without dress sense. Still, much better than Vorderman though.
The choice of guests is necessarily varied, and impossible to please everyone, I personally like Jo Brand but thought that Lesley Garratt’s bawling was awful.
Lets hope that the powers to be think it worth while to invest some time and money in the show or I think it will be axed sooner rather than later.

Next week, instead of Countdown at 5.20am,we’ll be instead be treated to repeats of St Elsewhere.

Surely the removal of the repeats is the sign C4 wants rid of the show?

I wonder if anyone else noticed that the conundrum today (Tues Nov 10th) which actually was RAINSWEPT could have been PINESTRAW. As a keen golfer I saw it in a few seconds; it’s what the Americans call the rough at Augusta (as I am sure you would know Jeff) where the Masters takes place annually. But maybe it is not considered to be an English word. It did make me wonder however what would happen if a contestant came up with a word in the conundrum that was valid but not what was expected?
On a general note: well done both Jeff and Rachel. You had difficult acts to follow and have settled into the roles superbly well. Life would not be the same without Countdown.

Well done for spotting the alternative answer to the conundrum but it would not have counted either as an answer to the conundrum or a nine letter word in any of the letters games.

For words to score they have to be in the dictionary used by Countdown, which at the moment is the Oxford Dictionary of English (2nd Edition revised). I have checked and “Pinestraw” is not in it.

As to what would happen if it transpired that there were two valid answers to the conundrum, an ‘official’ one and one which the conundrum setter had not spotted, then I would think that they would have to allow the ‘unofficial’ one.
