The return of Celebrity Big Brother

Channel 4’s New Year kicks off in earnest tonight with the return of Celebrity Big Brother… Love it or loathe it, I suspect there’ll be no escaping the action in the house for the next three weeks, and we would love to know what you make of it.

Rumours about potential housemates have been brewing in the Channel 4 forums for the last few weeks, but tonight will see Davina finally put the speculation to an end and unveil the 11 celebrities that have been brave enough to take up residency in Britain’s most famous house.

I caught up with Celebrity Big Brother’s commissioning editor David Williams after his Christmas break, and he told me he was particularly excited about this year’s series:

“It’s January. It’s cold and we’re credit crunched… what better time to lock a merry bunch of unsuspecting celebrities in a house and let Big Brother have his wicked way!

“After spending the last few months keeping the names of our celebrity housemates under lock and key, I can’t wait to see them walking into that house and into our lives for three weeks of fun and games. Bring it on!”

How do you think the celebrities will cope in their new environment? Do you think they’ll be able to survive away for the trappings of their showbiz lives? Will they be up to the challenges that Big Brother throws at them? Will the cope under the pressure of Big Brother’s watchful eye? What sort of Big Brother will we see this time?

Tell us what you think, and we’ll make sure your views get straight to the heart of the Big Brother commissioning and production team.

It’s hard to know what to think given we have about 2 hours of live feed during the day (I’ve just tuned in at midnight and most of the HM’s are asleep so 6 hours of live feed during the night is completely pointless)

utter disgrace cutting the live feed.
people email to complain about how the fans are being treated and yet again we get ignored.
whats really insulted people they try making out these tiny clips on the bb home page are what people want..
NO people want the live feed back.
and now it turns out c4 are cutting the red button services to save money and thats why theres no live feed.
if money is that much of a problem roll on when C4 finally let bigbrother goto another station and realise it has a future.
Management of the show is nothing short of a disgrace.

The way Channel 4 have treated Big Brother during January is disgusting. Axing the red button live feed defeats the point of Big Brother – You know, being able to watch their every move.

Personally, I hope series ten is the last series to be shown on Channel 4, like Brookside (to name one) you’re destroying the programmes that make Channel 4 unique – Lets hope FIVE picks up BB for 2010/2011 – They’d give it a decent home.

Your attitude towards the show stinks. The ratings prove it

The only reason video viewings on the website went up last year is because you axed the internet live stream.
No doubt you will claim that the videos were so popular this year that you were right to axe the red button too.
People only watch the videos as a last resort, you have taken away our choice.

I agree with all of the above comments. Big Brother was once Channel 4’s biggest show, and I still think it is today, though maybe not by as big a margin as it once was.

Ratings for BB are clearly dropping, but Channel 4 only has themselves to blame – their attitude to BB stinks.

Axing the twenty-four hour live feed was like ripping the heart out of the show as it is a fundamental factor of the Big Brother format that you are able to follow it twenty four hours a day. That’s not to say that viewers should be glued to it for hours on end, but the ability to tune in whenever you want is crucial. Make no mistake, if it was up to producers Endemol, then there would be four feeds and an interactive service accessible via the red button like there was in BB3.

The excuse for axing it – that video clips were being viewed more – is a disgrace. It is a further insult to fans that Channel 4 are now blocking numerous videos of the show on YouTube, despite it being said in previous years that they had no problem with it. I accept that now full episodes are being added to iTunes that it may affect Channel 4’s profits, so full episodes may be blocked, but it’s insulting that clips are being blocked. It’s even more insulting that those who upload the adverts are finding them blocked – surely uploads of the adverts just promote the show more?

Talking of adverts, the CBB6 advertising campaign was completely sloppy. It was clear Channel 4 just poorly edited over the BB9 adverts. The main problem with the ad campaigns is that it gives viewers no reason to watch – a sequence of flashy graphics does not sell the show to potential new viewers.

The fault is not entirely with Channel 4 though – the producers have done nothing with CBB6. The lack of any twist at all to the series has ruined it. Even if they had just brought back the Heaven/Hell divide, it would have spiced up the show a little.

It’s clear that all of Big Brother’s problems come from the CBB5 race row – it has left C4 and Endemol scared to do anything that may be seen as controversial.

Channel 4 needs to change its attitude and Endemol need to come up with new ideas for BB10 if Big Brother is to stand any chance of gaining any viewers.

Most importantly, however, they need to stop worrying about the complainers and the critics and OFCOM and concentrate on trying to make BB return to its glory days.
