Last day of the American circus and it’s nearly time to come home. We go to CBS and see clips of Harper’s Island and the Beverly Hills spin-off 90210. We see a full hour of The Cleaner and, with unintentional and irritating irony, I messily spill my popcorn all over the floor. read more

It’s an early start as we head over the valley to visit ABC, which is Disney to everyone else. They begin the day with presentations from senior company execs before moving onto the first show from Steven Bochco, Raising the Bar. read more

Today we’re over at Fox. Security command us to park beneath Julie Andrews. An astonishingly intimate request - and one we hope her agent has legally approved. There’s palpable relief when we spot the 50ft painting of The Sound of Music star splashed over the car park wall. read more

Our New York week comes to a close with a disarmingly impressive Upfront from Fox. All their major stars lined up on stage: immaculately groomed, scandalously glamorous. read more

This morning’s Upfront wasn’t a traditional broadcaster but cable station Turner and its three channels TNT, TBS and TruTV. They talked, in blazing pyrotechnic language, about selling airtime to their audiences with “contextual targeting” and by “connecting TV brands with advertiser brands”. read more

Day two at the Upfronts gave us a peek into the mind of Steve MacPhearson at ABC. Prior to the presentation, The Bee Gees’ Staying Alive boomed through the room - some curious lyrical symbolism perhaps, but a splendid bass line. read more
