Tom Conti tells BBC we're his favourite
I was minding my own business on Sunday morning, doing the washing-up from the night before.
As is my want, I had Radio 4 on – tuned to Broadcasting House.
As usual they had a panel of celeb newspaper reviewers on. Somehow Paddy O’Connell, for it was he, fell to asking the panel: “what’s the best thing on the television?”
Quick as a flash, one of the panellists, the eternally rewarding Tom Conti, chimed, “Channel 4 News”.
It was followed by what seemed to me a slightly awkward silence, though not in my household!

Moi aussi….I was delighted to hear an instinctive complimentary response from a respected actor. A man of sound judgement.
Congratulations to all the team, both in front and behind the camera.
I look forward to his comments.
I await the Tom Conti Award
The ‘Most Uplifting Comment on a Sunday’ …..fantastic..!
How lovely to hear spontaneous praise when the person doesn’t even know you’re listening. Encouragement is such a gift. It brings the best out in us all. I have to say even my husband is turning to Channel 4 News now but I think he spends most of his time looking out for your odd sox. Last night’s coverage was superb. Those courageous young ladies taking on the police and playing them at their own game. Thank God for people like that. Where will it all end Jon. We criticise China , Burma and places like that but we are going the same way. I also thought the visit to the Art gallery was stunning . I have never seen such beautiful art work. The colours were magnificent. If I was rich I’d have one on my wall and stare at it for hours.
Well I agree wholeheartedly. After a hard days slog battling the credit crunch here in Spain, my wife and myself get the kids to bed and sit down to enjoy the Channel 4 news every night. It is the best and fairest news coverage available and I commend you all.
I have to confess to making a similarly spontaneous comment recently and further qualifying it by saying that Jon Snow is worth his weight in license fees…
Krishnan and Samira are also world class: a perfect amalgam of intellect, gravitas and personality. How can BBC News possibly compete if they can’t retain people of this calibre.
Flaneur Brian : ‘worth his weight in licence fees’ – you’ll only encourage them; don’t want BBC poaching.
As for Broadcasting House – is that a news show, or an exercise in unqualified whimsy???
A fine team I can listen to any one of you, superb.
I was starting to have a bit more respect for ITN Lite on ITV1 with its coverage of Afghanistan, but fear it has the perfect foil now to resort to its old ways with presumably ‘ in depth’ views from Michael Jackson fans for the next 3 weeks.
The only problem I have with CH4 News now is its clashing with a re-run of On The Buses on ITV3 – decisions! decisions!
That is good news, that Tom Conti remarked about C4 was his favourite….
NB: I am also a contributor on BBC Service comments boards….
