I’m in a high-speed inflatable on the Thames, south of the barrier. What a godforsaken spot! The ExCeL centre where the G20 leaders will meet on Thursday is flanked by a large scrapyard and rather forlorn-looking Victorian dock.

London taxis are going off a cliff

Whilst this may appear somewhat Londo-centric, I am increasingly coming to recognise the London taxi cab as a credible “economic indicator”. Most times I am observing astride by bicycle, but on occasion I am in one, sometimes even with the said conveyance.
