New BBC sub-genre delivery structures…
Further to the Carol Thatcher, Jonathan Ross, Russell Brand, Jeremy Clarkson controversies at the BBC, I think I may be on to something.
I’m pretty certain that each has collided with the new “sub-genre, multi-platform delivery structures” being put in place at the BBC.
I’m not going to embarrass the fine individual who penned the email below, hailing as he does from the upper sub-genre echelons at the BBC. But I suspect we may be somewhere near cracking Aunty’s problem.
Dear All
I’m writing to tell you about some structural changes I’m making in the Knowledge Commissioning team in BBC Vision. These changes are the result of the imperative to engineer a major shift of commitment towards the devising and delivery of the integrated subgenre strategies essential to the next stage of the Knowledge strategy on all platforms…
To achieve this it’s vital that we have a joined up supply system – with in-house and indie commissioning reintegrated under a series of new, focused subgenre slates…
Please see attached an organisational chart clearly showing how the new Knowledge Commissioning structure looks.
I’m confident that this structure will allow us to deliver focused sub-genre strategies with clear editorial leadership…
I will make a further announcement on the Knowledge Multiplatform Commissioning structure shortly.
Although I have taken some lines out purely for brevity’s sake, every word of this is genuine.

Now, I’d like to think I’m reasonably intelligent but having spent the last 18 years working in a number of different organisations, from blue chip private sector, to the public sector to charitable trusts, I have never come across such a load of ‘buzz-word’ laden, utter nonsense.
You’re right Jon. This is the heart of the BBC’s problem – it’s lost its heart. In place of the education and entertainment focussed executives of the past, we’re into the era of inane career bulls**ters, who attend all the ‘right’ courses, know their spreadsheets and their Powerpoint presentations and who haven’t spoken to someone who lives outside West London since they left University.
haha, brilliant. ‘ Plain English’ out the window.
Why don’t they just break the BBC up and sell off the pieces. It’s just another bureaucracy run amok.
Maybe you should have asked John Prescott to comment on this. It would make more sense than asking for his opinion on bonus culture.Shouldn’t you have asked him why the public purse was doling out money, houses etc to him. Please no more. It ill behoves any of them to comment on anyone with their noses in the trough.
“Cut the crap – make it happen” it ain’t.
The only sub-genre strategies I care about are the Channel 4 News variety – e.g. Which colour tie? Stripy or plain psychadelic socks? You know – thing that really matter!
Joking apart, this email shows the Beeb has lost it in more ways than one. Personally, I would not want to work in this ginormous workplace if I was within media. Too big – no soul.
(And pretty boring ties.)
I think you’re onto something Jon, something really exquisite. This guy’s a genius; he’s obviously adoring every second of his job, I think his vision for a multi integrated sub genre engineering platform with re-integrated indie supply is a very workable middle management structure with optional bells on, and if you’re after editorial leadership, look no further than this kid.
If this guy was in charge of that grotesque buffoon Ross, do you honestly think that Ross would be sitting on 18 large over 36 months? No he’d be sitting at home stuck on page 612 of his behavioral contract.
Bottom line is, this guy’s got his own sweet gig – he just loves his Blackberry round robins on a Sunday at his local Bernie with the Mrs and nippers in tow. Respect.
The real issue, is that unlike our dear ol’ Arthur Pewtey here, the likes of Ross, Brand, Clarkson etc, lack a basic pride in what they do. They don’t need to stand by anything they say, as the genre they’re working in, allows them that freedom.
If they actually thought a little about what they were saying, dear ol’ Arthur wouldn’t have much to write about…which for me would be a shame, as I love a man who takes a pride in his work.
Onwards and upwards Arthur, the summit’s in sight !
I don’t think Jonathan Ross is funny.
You know how East London Cockney workers came up with rhyming slang so that their West London bosses couldn’t understand them? Now they are fighting back…
what rhymes with “indie commissioning”?
The really sad thing is that the BBC is not the only part of government like this. Try applying for a job with any local council or UK sport for example, and you get the same nonsense. I will not even comment about the UN and EU structures. They are even more inane. You have to fill in 20 page job applications with questions that are totally meaningless and will give no idea of your abilities other than developing garbage filled replies to keep people happy. And I do not believe for one instance the trite comment about the compulsory equal opportunities form – that we only use this information for, er, information! Somewhere along the road we have lost our way. And Mr BBC has clearly lost it big time. He is in fairy land.
It was George Entwistle, head of BBC Knowledge. Media Guardian has unmasked him. George is tipped as next DG but 2. And he used to be the Editor of Newsnight, as did the current Editor of C4 News – something Snowy knows very well.
I cannot understand all the fuss. It makes perfect sense to me.

What’s up with it? The man’s job is to make sure the bbc is organised in way that matches the kinds of content it produces, regardless of who produces it (internal or independents) and what platforms (terrestrial, digital, world, internet, radio) it goes out on, Clearly his jargon reflects that, just like a doctor, lawyer or builder’s does. You’re all beeb-bashing. Do I want BBC output or Sky/ITV/C4? let me think…go on then, I’ll take the beeb, watrs & all.
Jon:
I am not surprised with the tenor of the bbc in the recent months.
But Jon, where is the attached organisational chart clearly showing how the new Knowledge Commissioning structure looks? I am dying to see it. Please.
