“Iran has begun negotiations with the six major world powers in Geneva on a wide realm of global issues…. The Geneva meeting is based on Iran’s package of proposals released earlier this month.”
Er, not exactly. This morning’s news story from Press TV – the Iranian government’s English language mouthpiece – shows what Iran wishes today’s talks were about: namely, nothing which begins with “n” and ends in “r”. Their “package of proposals” reads like a beauty queen’s wishlist: world peace, multilateral disarmament, international justice. Certainly not the newly-exposed nuclear enrichment plant, dug into a mountain inside a revolutionary guard complex near Qom. Or the suspicion of western intelligence agencies that Iran has restarted its attempts to engineer nuclear warheads.
Maybe it’s all a big misunderstanding. The Intercontinental Hotel, where many delegates for the Geneva talks are staying, is hosting another meeting. The sign outside the conference room reads “The World Muslim League welcomes the participants to the conference of the initiative of the custodian of the two holy mosques on dialogue and its impact in disseminating human values.”
Maybe the Iranians think that’s the conference they’re attending.

I rarely miss Ch4 News. I appreciate the depth of your coverage of the Iran standoff with Israel and the USA over alleged WMD intentions. What I would appreciate on this occasion of Iran coverage would be some greater balance.
Israel has 165 illegal nuclear warheads (more than the UK), refuses to sign the Antiproliferation Treaty and operates a secret illegal nuclear weapons manufacturing plant at Dimona. Yet all we hear about as WMD in the region is Iran, Iran and more Iran – just as we did about Iraq and look what sort of mess that got us into. Gaza and Lebanon demonstrated Israel’s lack of self-control in terms of brutality. Why do we hear this endless complaining about Iran when Israel is just down the road as a proven aggressor to its neighbours, non-observer of UN Resolutions, and has its own colossal nuclear story?
This is what a secret nuclear installation looks like.

And it has nothing to do with Iran at all.
p.s. many happy returns of 28th Sep, Jon.
Starts with n and ends in r
Ah yes, neuter, that must be the right word.
Seriously though, I’m quite sure that’s how both sides see it. The West want to achieve neutering whilst Iran wants to avoid it.
Who’d be a Diplomat….!
