For many Labour MPs this was a last chance to get one over on Tories they feel are marching into government – a bit like sewing prawns in the curtains.
Margaret Beckett was drafted in as a Stop Bercow candidate but even her supporters couldn’t resist putting one of David Cameron’s least favourite people on the planet into the Speaker’s chair.
Tories were livid, the abuse was flying and Labour MPs were relishing every minute. “Bercow will have homeless people in Speaker’s House by tomorrow,” one Tory said to me – expletives deleted.
For many other Labour MPs it was simply a question of, what would a Young victory look like? Would voters think MPs had – in Parmjit Dhanda’s phrase – “got it”?
They decided a big crisis required a big leap. But the Commons now has a Speaker almost no one in the main opposition party wanted and life – not lately dull round here – just got even more interesting.

Sounds like this new ‘Speaker’ won’t be any different to the corrupt arrogant one that just got booted out.
MPs may think they’ll glean some victory out of this fiasco but, it’s pathetic and, people await their vote to show them all who’s getting booted out. Although who gets voted in is irrelevant, because they’re all the same… liars who serve the rich.
BERCOW CAME ACROSS AS QUITE ‘SLIMY’ IN TODAY’S LUNCHTIME NEWS INTERVIEW. LIKE ALL THE OTHERS HE IS IN ‘DENIAL’ ABOUT ANY WRONGDOING REGARDING HIS EXPENSES. SADLY, ALTHOUGH HE SAID HE WAS HAPPY TO EXPLAIN WHY HE HAD RETURNED SOME EXPENSES, C4 DECIDED WE’D RATHER SEE THE ADVERTS INSTEAD OF HEARING HIS ANSWER!!
A longer version of Gary Gibbon’s interview with John Bercow will be available to watch in this blog post shortly.
A fair and democratic vote? It might be in Westminster speak …..but to Joe Public its the old guard reverting to form.
Mps had this golden opportunity to prove they were listening to the public and to vote in an untainted speaker… instead what do they do…they revert to form and point score against each other. When will it end!!
Shame on you all
