This’ll get some Tory MPs’ blood boiling. Not least the ones who cheered the anonymous attack on David Cameron that turned up in Conservative MPs’ postbags on Monday.
The Chair of the Senior Salaries Review Body, Bill Cockburn, was giving evidence to the Public Administration Select Committee today. Mr Cockburn will be working with Sir Christopher Kelly’s review of MPs’ expenses.
Mr Cockburn was asked about the possibility of having two pay scales for “full-time” and “part-time” MPs – i.e. giving a pay cut to MPs (most of them Tories) with outside interests.
Many of these Tories already feel “got at” by David Cameron going along with Gordon Brown’s new register of interests rules requiring them to publish their exact outside income and hours worked.
Certain Tory MPs go into orbit if you even mention it. You really wouldn’t want to be around when they hear someone’s thinking of creating a two-tier pay scale for MPs and they’d be on the lower rung.
PS Click here for the list people have been waiting for, of money paid back so far by MPs – just published.
PPS At first count this looks like more than 180 MPs have paid back money. Many of the names have not been in the headlines and many of the amounts will make your eyes pop.

Of course these parasitic MPs will fear a 2 tier system. They’re just waiting in the wings, licking their glutinous chops at the thought of getting their fingers deeper in the parliamentary expenses gold pot, once the dictator announces the Gen. Elec. date. Then there’ll be a frenzy of ass kissing, favours done, complements given, promises made, etc.etc. while snouts are digging deeper and jostling their position for attention from Mr Big Wig PM!
While talk of lower pay fraudulently gets spread around fearful powerless Brits, BA staff considering working for nothing!, Vauxhall staff living from day to day and all those tens of millions out of work in the UK, one wonders and loses sleep that MPs might just have a ‘cut’ imposed on their extortionate salaries! Poor little F… Pigs!
I’ve often stated, the wealthy, rich, vested interest, arrogant, pompous, ex public school class of people should be removed from politics and the trough that lines their personal interests. Britain has approx. 60 million people. Parliament/governments job is equality not division and self serving the well off as has been the case for the last 40+ years.
MPs should be payed in geographical vouchers that can only be spent at independent local stores, spread across the country.
Just clicked to the (parliament.uk) link in your penultimate para above, Gary, to find only a note to say ‘this table is currently being updated’! Seems the public is to be denied the chance to check the data over the weekend when they might have the time to do so.
