Create a 3D trail and you could end up on TV
Channel 4 is searching for filmmakers who can create an ident with a difference – in 3D. To celebrate Channel 4’s upcoming ‘3D week’ filmmakers are being asked to upload 3D clips that feature the number four to a dedicated YouTube channel. The most creative entries could end up being broadcast on Channel 4 to promote its forthcoming 3D week.
A special filter applied by the YouTube player helps filmmakers by doing away with some of the time-consuming editing required to ensure that their
clips will be viewable through 3D glasses. Curious filmmakers can learn about how to produce 3D video by watching a special tutorial at www.youtube.com/3dweekon4 and an additional guide from YouTube here. Channel 4 has also provided some example clips to inspire potential film makers about what is possible in 3D. Find them at www.youtube.com/3DWeekon4.
YouTube viewers will be able to watch the uploaded clips in 3D if they are wearing 3D glasses – which are being distributed free via Sainsbury’s stores in November. Please also respond in the comments here to request a pair of the glasses to be sent to you to use whilst editing the clips.
So if you’re interested in getting involved, you’ve got just 2 more weeks to make your cracking 10 second clip and upload it to YouTube. It’s the perfect weekend project for a creative spirit and their friends! Check out the YouTube site – even Derren Brown’s done a 3D clip for us.
About 3D Week on Channel 4
3D seems to be everywhere in 2009 – numerous cinema releases, major platform development by Sky and already a few firsts (e.g. Keane live 3D webcast). In celebration of the unique experience 3D can offer, Channel 4 is set to broadcast a week of special shows that celebrate the golden era of 3D footage. The centrepiece of the week will be previously unseen footage, shot in 3D, of the Queen during her coronation year. The Queen in 3D is a unique historical October 15th 2009 record of Britain in 1953 giving viewers a chance to step into the past and experience this amazing film in three dimensions.
Other highlights include Derren Brown’s 3D Magic Spectacular in which Derren will play host to some of the world’s greatest, funniest and most shocking magicians performing magic specially shot in stunning 3D. And The Greatest Ever 3D Moments reveals the top ten 3D moments of all time from movies, television and pop videos.

Great idea to have a 3d week. SHAME on channel 4 as the 3d glasses can only be got at Sainsburys. What if like me we live in the Orkney Islands which as no Sainsburys within a reasonable travelling distance ie a boat ride. We have Tescos, and Co op and Lidl. Any chance of letting us know how we can join in this channel 4 fun, after all there are a lot of us and I would like to think we are just as important to channel 4 as other viewers.

I’m happy to mail you some glasses Gwen. Let me know how many you require. You could be the official distributor on the Orkneys
Please email me your address. (apipes@channel4.co.uk)

My brother and his girlfriend have the same problem, they live in Thurso, no way of a Sainsbury’s up there either! They were really looking forward to 3D week.
I tried to pick them up some glasses in Glasgow but all the city centre stores have sold out and they’ve no idea if more stocks are coming in.
It’s a shame there was only one distributor selected…

I can’t agree more @Andrew: there were some excellent responses! thanks all who took the time and effort to respond.

I have to agree with the comments about the specs only being available at Sainsburys. Here in Lincoln, in common with many supermarkets, Sainsburys have decided to put their only branch is in an out of town location that’s very difficult to get to without a car.
What’s wrong with giving them away with the TV Times like the old days!

I’m in the same situation, the nearest sainsburys is about 2 hours away, and costs a ridiculous amount to travel just to get some 3D glasses. I don’t want to miss all the 3D fun.

i live in city centre and all of the stores have none left didn’t know it was first come first serve they advertise like every single one of us can watch it!

So what happened to the competition? The week is almost over and NONE of the clips submitted has been shown. Why not?

With the advent of large tv screens this makes 3D worthwhile. The older red/cyan technology keeps thing simple and cheap for the viewer. Might be worth C4 (or Virgin) doing more stuff like this and getting one over on Sky without the need for a subscription or a new tv! As for the glasses I agree that limiting it to Sainsburys was a bad idea as the newspapers etc. could have been used for distribution? If anyone is still looking for glasses they are widely available on ebay and the programmes can be recorded for viewing later or viewed on catchup. If the episodes of 3D were to become more available better quality glasses could be purchased. Go on C4 get some of those older films shown and start recording in 3D.

re my previous comment. The sainsburys glasses are in “colorcode 3D” amber/blue not red/cyan.Was the original Queen filmed in red/cyan?
November 19, 2009
I’ve been to a couple of Sainsburys but no luck finding any glasses, want to see 3d t4.

It’s somewhat comforting to find I’m not alone in not being able to obtain even 1 pair of 3D glasses. Nearest Sainsbury’s to me is at least a 30 minute drive away, but it was out of stock last Saturday. Have since visited 6 other stores whilst I’ve been away down south on business, always the same story – none left. My family are understandably disappointed, and I hate to think how big my carbon footprint has been this week!

Hi folks. I have sent out quite a few glasses this week via Royal Mail. Very sorry that not all of you could get your hands on a pair. Please appreciate that we tried very hard to get the best distribution solution possible.
To those of you waiting to see your films: we have cut the trail of films, and this 40sec spot will play out around Friday the 13th tonight, as well as Hannah Montana on Sunday. Hope you like the montage!
Thanks again for the great efforts.

I know they’re not free but, for anyone in remote areas, I sent for some on ebay and received them next day and they only cost about a £1 for 2 pairs with postage so it would probably cost more than that for fuel!!! Record or use catchup on the computer and watch them when you get the glasses.Just remember to get the colorcode blue/amber NOT red/cyan.If C4 decide to run more 3D I’ll definately get proper glasses. It works well on my 32″ LCD and the computer.I don’t know about CRT tv’s. Possibly HD type tv’s give a better result. It takes a few minutes for your eyes to adjust and it’s best to view in the dark. I believe, at a pinch, Quality Street wrappers can be used over normal glasses.Blue right eye,Amber left eye. Hope that helps!

Same problem here, I have tried 7 branches of Sainsbury,s in the Merseyside area and none have the glasses. Why didn’t you include all supermarkets as not everyone falls into the income demographic to regularly (if ever), shop at Sainsbury’s. At present in Liverpool there seems to be a Tesco opening every week, in a few years there will be one on every street corner. The best distribution system would have been to include them in the Radio Times and other TV listings as these are aimed at people who watch TV regularly (I don’t unless there’s something worth watching or special event like say…a 3D week!).
