As Richard posted we have been gearing up to make 000s of hours of classic programmes from the Channel 4 archive available on the 4oD service on Channel4.com. These are now becoming available at www.channel4.com/programmes/4od and the collection will increase on a daily and weekly basis.

We’ve got some freshly designed pages and new features. On the 4oD landing page see our “Dallas” retro-style promotional area – check out the hottest content and perhaps some shows you’d forgotten about. You can browse by date to catch-up on a show you’ve missed. Or use our video finder gadget to search for your favourite Channel 4 shows. As you start to type, the predictive functionality will suggest programmes to you. Select the programme you are looking for and you’ll go to the video page for that programme, (like this one for The Inbetweeners). Remember that not all programmes will be available initially – keep coming back to see what new programmes have been added.

If you prefer to watch video using a pop-out player then just select the pop-out option. The player is currently only available in a standard size. We’re working on making this re-sizable. If the “S” button is displayed in the video player this means that subtitles are available. Click on the “S” and subtitles will be loaded. We’ve also been doing some technical work on the player so you should experience smoother playback.

In order to protect younger viewers in your household from watching unsuitable content, you can set-up a PIN, (Personal Identification Number), at one of two levels. Click on the Parental Control link to find out more.

Also, you may notice a C4 BLOGS link in the header…this goes to a new hub page for Channel 4 blogs, so you can see and access all of the blogs we have in a single place.

As usual please let us know what you think.  If you need any help with the 4oD site please visit our FAQs page.

  1. Chris Says:

I’m pleased to hear you are adding more programmes to 4oD. I must say I was slightly frustrated when I could only watch certain episodes of Time Team.
I do hope this is one of the shows that will get all episodes added to the collection.

  2. martin Says:

all very well if this channel4 worked for everyone…. will this loading content bug ever get fixed one wonders….

  3. Richard Davidson-Houston Says:

@Martin – It’s only occurring for a few people. Have you by any chance got Peerguardian, HotSpot shield or some other ad-blocker running? if so, could you try turning them off and report back?

  4. Martin Says:

I understand its only occurring for some but its particularly annoying as its been broke for the last 48 hours continously now and I am going to have to miss the grand final of countdown unless the problem is fixed within the next 18 hours.

The other annoying thing is noone can shed some light as to what the problem is at least 40 people must have wrote in with the same problem plus everyone who has the problem but hasnt bothered logging it so probably hundreds of people in total.

I dont appear to have anything like you mentioned, I do have latest adobe and adobe shockwave and Avast! free edition virus scanner and I have had some success in getting it to work until the last 48 hours in which has not worked once in hundreds of attempts. It gets stuck on “Transferring Data from realmedia” and doesnt go to “read server” and play the adverts and the content.

I am sorry for the inconvenience just this is rather annoying and probably is for everyone who is affected.

  5. John Kerr Says:

I have same problem as Martin. I am a network engineer and it has me whooped. I can only figure, virgin are port blocking on the range 4od operatess on. As I too have none of the software or adblockers running.

  6. Alun@4oD Says:

Martin/John, can you try going to this url please:
    http://realmedia.channel4.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_sx.ads/test.channel4.com/adtest/123456@x96
You should see a small black and white image of the 4oD logo. Just want to check that you can establish a connection to the realmedia server correctly.

    Thanks.

  7. I Says:

I have the same problem as John and Martin. I can see the white image of the 4oD logo.
I do not have any ad blocker on my pc.
    Please can someone help?
I have sent several emails to 4oD support. So far no one has been able to help.

We have no problems with BBC iplayer. Is it too much to ask that 4oD provides a service that actually works?

    Thanks.

  8. Martin Says:

Just checked that link now and yes I can see the logo. Well, mine has been working the last few days :) up until today that is in which it has gone down again :(

It cannot be the ISP as everyone is on different ISP’s so one can only imagine the problem lies with 4OD set up. But, finding out the problem is obviously proving to be a million dollar question……..

  9. Tom Says:

Please could you consider playing Salvage Squad on your website.

    Thank You

  10. Alison Crowe Says:

@Martin/John Kerr/I – We’re currently looking at some tools that will help us to diagnose the problems you’re having. We’ll keep you posted.

  11. Martin Says:

well thats good to hear. My 4OD has been down ALL evening and ALL night which is sooo annoying and must have tried it hundreds of times using Firefox, Chrome & Safari without any luck.

  12. Martin Says:

Also, the c4.com server has been hopeless the last few nights, taking ages to load on a decent overall ISP speed of approx 2.4meg according to speedtest.net. I dont see why you cant just bring back the old 4OD player until you get the website fixed as it is taking an eternity to be fixed
