Freaks Of Nature

With only two years to go until the London 2012 Paralympic Games, C4Paralympics takes to the streets of Edinburgh to get to try and get to the bottom of Channel 4’s ‘Freaks Of Nature’ advertising campaign.

    When the man in the ad says he is a freak of nature, I find this very upsetting. I had a boyfriend with MS and he also needed to have a leg amputated. These things do not make people freaks. Live and let live and accept people for what they are.

    I think you have missed the point a little Helen. The phrase ‘freaks of nature’ is commonly applied to phenomenal able bodied athletes such as Usain Bolt or Muttiah Muralitharan. Using it in the context of elite disabled athletes challenges people’s perceptions of these athletes and the levels of performance they can attain. I hope you watched ‘Inside Incredible Athletes’ and now understand the campaign a little better!

    what a brilliant prog..excellently filmed, things have come a long way since my dad played basketball in the common wealth games in the 1950s, He would have been amazed by the positive view now portrayed by the media, not losing something but gaining new experiences.
