Saharan dust travelling towards the UK – video

Yesterday, I wrote a blog about the Saharan dust that has been falling across the UK during the past few days.

The Met Office has released a video (below) that combines a number satellite images, showing the plume of dust (bright pink) that has fallen across the UK being lifted up over the Sahara a few days ago.

It becomes entrained in a band of cloud (red) that is pushed towards us on a southerly wind. This cloud then produced rain that fell over the UK, washing the dust out of the atmosphere and down to the surface.

This still image captures the moment when the dust was lifted from the desert floor.
