Two fine bank holidays in a month? Surely not!

Once again, a bank holiday weekend is upon us and no doubt, many of us will be travelling or have outdoor plans with an extra day off at our disposal.

The early May bank holiday delivered some welcome sunshine and warmth for many of us, with temperatures into the low 20s Celsius. But what will this one bring?

Well, it may come as a surprise that it isn’t actually looking too bad. While it won’t be quite as warm as the last one, it’ll be decent enough – certainly in comparison to the cold, wind and rain that we’ve endured this week.

With the jet stream weakening for a few days and temporarily moving north of the UK, a ridge of high pressure will build, bringing lighter winds and fine weather for most.

Saturday

It’ll be a chilly start to the day with a touch of frost possible in rural areas, along with a few mist and fog patches.

Otherwise, it’s going to be a generally fine day with spells of sunshine lifting temperatures to 14-18C. This may not sound that warm, but with little wind and strong late-May sunshine, it’ll be pleasant.

There will be a few exceptions though, with the far west of Scotland and Northern Ireland, along with some North sea coasts of England having more cloud and feeling cool.

Sunday

England and Wales will have another fine day with light winds and decent spells of sunshine, lifting temperatures as high as 15-20C.

Scotland and Northern Ireland will start cloudy with outbreaks of rain, but this will weaken into the afternoon, with sunshine returning later.

Bank holiday Monday

There’s still an element of uncertainty about the detail for the weather on Monday, but it does look like eastern parts of England will have another decent day with spells of sunshine.

Elsewhere, cloud will thicken through the day with low pressure bringing a freshening breeze and outbreaks of rain to most places by lunchtime.

Rest of next week

Unfortunately, the jet stream picks up speed and dives south of us again through next week, which means that a return to cooler weather with wind and rain is on the cards.

At the moment, it seems like we’ll have to wait until the first week of June for things to settle down, with better prospects of high pressure, sunshine and some warmth.
