Bank holiday weather: a bit warmer but no heatwave

Once again we find ourselves with a bank holiday weekend upon us and the weather is no doubt at the forefront of many of our minds.

The weather during the last bank holiday was nothing special, which probably increases the expectation that this one will deliver something better.

Before I get on to the detail, I just want to make it clear that there isn’t going to be a heatwave during the bank holiday, or indeed next week – contrary to such stories in some newspapers.

Buttercup sundown

As for the rest of the summer, you can read more about the fact that it isn’t possible to predict the weather so far ahead here.

Now, back to the bank holiday weather, which is actually looking fairly decent. The main theme is one of sunshine and showers, with it warming up a little bit too.

Saturday

Saturday will be a day of sunshine and scattered showers – the heaviest of which will be across southern parts of the UK with possible thunder.

Temperatures will be close to average, reaching 17-21C widely, with the highest temperatures in south east England.

Sunday

Sunday will be another day of sunshine and scattered showers, although the heaviest ones are most likely in western areas. Further east, it could stay dry in most places.

Temperatures will again reach 17-21C, although eastern coasts of England and Scotland will be cooler at 12-15C, thanks to a cool north easterly wind off the North Sea.

Monday

For eastern parts of England, there is a lot of uncertainty about the weather on Monday. Cloud is likely to increase through the day with rain arriving, although when it arrives is proving hard to pin down.

Elsewhere, it’ll be another mostly fine day with sunny spells and just a few light scattered showers.

Temperatures will be similar to previous days at 17-21C, but cooler in eastern areas with increasing cloud and the possibility of some rain.

Start of June

At the moment, there are signs that high pressure will build to the north of the UK and low pressure to the south.

This would give the driest, sunniest weather across northern and western areas, whereas southern and eastern areas will be prone to seeing some showers, along with a cool breeze.

There are still no signs of a heatwave, even in the early part of June, with temperatures, at best, close to average.
