Gurkhas ‘stand by people’ after Nepal earthquake

Among those who’ve travelled out to help with the aid effort in Nepal is a group of Gurkha engineers from Britain.

The area worst affected by the quake is the homeland of those serving in the British army and, as fate would have it, 200 of them paraded through London today to mark the Gurkha brigade’s 200 years of service to Britain.

Others were out campaigning for better pensions for former Gurkhas living here.

We spoke to some of those involved about their reactions to the quake and their thoughts of friends and family still living in Nepal.

One mother told us her children had been planning to visit the UK for a holiday this month – but the British government had denied them visas. In the aftermath of Saturday’s disaster they’re homeless, hungry, and in need of medicine.
