Happy Birthday Twitter

Five years on and virtually everyone has at least heard of Twitter. Most know exactly what it is, some have a rough idea, a few still think it has something dodgy to do with chatrooms blogs Krishnan Guru-Murthy.

Too much has already been written about Twitter. It has been analysed ad nauseum, and few profound things have been said about it.

I stick to my view that if your company has a Twitter strategy it is probably rubbish (I originally used a more direct word) – Twitter is something that just happens, it can’t be controlled or strategised…. it is just another form of communication. But if you haven’t joined yet here are a few reasons why you should now take the plunge :

1. Twitter is probably the fastest way to find out what’s going on in the world from official sources. All the major news sources are on it and publish as soon as they have anything.

2. Twitter is also the place you might hear about things from unofficial sources first – it is a huge global community talking about what’s happening. It now competes with wire services such as Press Association or Reuters for being first with the news – albeit in a form that is often unknown and therefore less trustworthy and needs to be checked.

3. Twitter is a good way to reach people direct – you can often by-pass agents, press officers and gatekeepers

4. Twitter makes you smile : jokes, ironies, rants… it’s all here.

5. Twitter is the easiest outlet to say what you think, in a public space and argue about it.
