It’s hard to see what Rebekah Brooks’ resignation achieves now

Too little too late? Hard to see what Rebekah Brooks’ resignation achieves now it’s come so late in the day.

Advertisers might have slowed the stampede from the News of the World if it had come last week, a scalp proving that the Murdochs “got it.”

But it didn’t. Parliament might just have been a little more nervous of the Murdoch empire’s ability to reform and regroup if they’d been light-footed enough to jettison Rebekah Brooks earlier not hang on to her with matching lack of contrition in their public statements.

But now? It underlines that the Murdochs are on the back foot, reacting, arthritically, to shareholder opinion and public opinion, probably in that order.
