Review of Simon Aeppli’s In Case I Dissappear

Very good. It created more of an emotional resonance than a lot of the films here, without the use of voiceover.

Dropped you into a sensory experience to communicate a feeling of unease and agitation. In this respect it placed the viewer firmly within the emotional landscape of what it’s like to live in that town rather than narrating, lecturing and telling you what it’s like.

Brooding use of sound. Successfully edited to create an emotional narrative rather than a traditional narrative that appeals to your head and your thoughts. Obviously it makes you think and appeals to your head, what I’m saying is the narrative is not aiming for coherency in terms of language or construction of an argument in the same way that you would if you were writing an essay for school.

It adopts a stylistic approach that seeks to generate mood and feeling. If it captivates you and made sense to you on that level then it succeeded.

This film feels like a beautifully composed poem – revealing so much, yet saying so little. Rich in detail and yet strangely reticent, letting the viewer fill in the gaps. I heart!

Masterful blend of imagery and sound. I felt the filmmaker really had taken me with him as he made a personal pilgrimage of his family history and the history and soul of a town called Eden in northern Ireland. Words could not have conveyed the same emotion and feeling. Reminded me of one of my favorite documentaries that employed only imagery and sound – Koyaanisquatsi. Brilliant!

This film is like a symbolist painting in moving images. It is film in it’s raw sense and I admire it for this. I also liked the originality of most of the images…the only image I didnt think worked was the burning fire, as it seemed a bit cleched to me…I’m a bit of a cynic when it comes to atmospheric symbolism though and even I liked this film!
