There was a really nice tone and feeling to this film. There was a warmth and likeability to the filmmaker and how they came across.

And that really counts for a lot, especially if telly is the route you want to take. (You’re gonna have more success if you come across as likeable as opposed to coming across like a bastard.)
There was a stylistic unity to the visuals of the piece and the editing hit the right notes and kissed the voiceover on the cheek in all the right places. There was a sweetness to the voiceover. It was very simple but really sincere. And this was all complimented by the music and indeed the sentiments within. Really lovely to see a film about a hometown that wasn’t wraught with bitterness or frustration. But that’s Brighton for you. What do you expect? Bloody, happy bastards.

I love it. The super 8 contrast works really well. x
Fantastic to see a film that is extremely personal, the filmmaker puts up no barriers and you really feel a connection between her and her home town. She doesn’t over emphasize her praise for Brighton, just tells it how it is. The visuals are amazing, the filmmaker seems to have married style and substance in perfect harmony and it was a pleasure to watch.
A very nice piece of work by two very talented individuals.
I really like your short documentary, Jas. Maybe the sound of your voice could have been tweaked and given a bit more strength but everything is understandable so it’s fine. The text sounds honest and I think it’s important to have this authenticity to not make it feel like just another tourist promo. It is a very personal document cause you reveal a lot about yourself and not just about the town. I enjoyed watching it.
Oh and I loved the editing! You’ve picked many shots which might have ended in other editors’ trash cans, cause at first sight they might appear ‘dirty’ and ’shaky’ but they bring your film to life more than anything else.
an enjoyable film, made with the lightness of touch and delicacy not normally associated with British film. A real talent. Well done
Good use of the super 8 – I have blogged about it
Narration reminds me of my mum reading me exciting stories before bed!
Structured really well, love the question you ask at the beginning, the meaning in the middle and the refreshing positive ending with a beautiful shot where you want to explore the world! I will explore the world with you too!
Hope you do well. x
This film has a very unique feel and story which is complimented brilliantly by the brave visual style. I am also a filmmaker from Brighton and I think they managed to capture something very truthful and beautiful about the place. The super 8 footage works perfectly to convey the diverse and eccentric atmosphere that Brighton has. Top notch.
Perfect.
Considered, well paced and personal. Nicely done…simple is always best.
Well done.
I really enjoyed this film, coming from Brighton i think it portrays Brighton really well but the story over the top i think applies a majority of people who live there as we’ve all viewed it from different perspectives. i believe it was very truthful to Brighton.
It has a real warmth, poetry and frankness that gives a great sense of your character and how where and how you grew up has formed you.
A really beautiful musing on a town I know and love. Brighton is a big part of my life and the film makers captured the spirit of Brighton in the same way Brighton captured me. This is an important film and I’m delighted to see that this is how it has been received. I hope the film makers are safe in the knowledge that it took a Brightonian back to the best years of his life.
Wow. This film is superb. I’m also from Brighton, and I think you have captured it wonderfully. I love the grainy super 8, it lends the film the feel of an olden day postcard, which fits with Brighton. Your use of colours is exquisite, from the blues of the sky and sea, to the vividness of the deckchairs and pride costumes. This is a very honest and frank account, letting the viewer truly see what makes you who you are, and truly leaves it up to them to form their own opinions. A beautiful film.
really captured brighton perfectly!
I have to disagree with previous comments. This film came across as self indulgent. I know that it is hard to avoid in a my home town documentary but this unlikeable trait was not countered by orginality or likeability. More like a simple teenager commenting on how they are whilst endlessly staring in a mirror or any reflective surface. Wow! To think Brighton has a lot of hippies in it and people with lesbian parents live there. Too predictable.
Great shots of Brighton, Jasmine. Brings back lots of happy memories for me. Well done!
It can be a scary thing when you open up to strangers; but more to your family and friends. I really admire you for being so honest. It’s a beautiful film.
A very moving and personal documentary. Well shot and edited, like the use of super8.
I liked the feeling this film gave. It made me remember growing up…and remember that whether you love or hate your town, it is the people that are the sum of its parts.
This is nice film, reflective and innocent. It reminds me, I’m not alone, I am me but mean different things to different people, a son, a brother, a boyfriend, a cool dude (Okay, that’s the mirror talking). Well done to the film makers.
