Yvette Cooper challenges Nick Clegg on child poverty

When Nick Clegg returns from New York he’ll find a letter waiting for him on his doormat from the shadow work and pensions secretary Yvette Cooper. It won’t make comfortable reading.

She points out that FactCheck caught him out over “unfounded and misleading rhetoric at the Lib Dem conference where you claimed that under Labour child poverty in the UK had increased”.

In fact, child poverty did go down under Labour, though not by much.

You, like La Cooper, can read the FactCheck for yourselves here. FactCheck – first with the facts.

Have to agree, Under Labour child poverty did decrease, But not by as much as they has initially pledged.

I’m sure this was a slip of the tongue; if you listen to the speech, he was rattling off a load of things fairly quickly. If he says it was a slip, I have no reason to disbelieve.

(Quite, I must add, unlike Gordon Brown’s “slips”).
