With a general election looming, FactCheck returns to audit some economies of truth. This enemy of damned lies and statistics was first launched in the run-up to the 2005 election to examine the dubious claims and counter claims of politicians. Recently reborn as a blog edited by Channel 4 News correspondent Cathy Newman, FactCheck is back on the trail of statistical spin and political fudge. If you’ve got suggestions for topics to investigate, you can email the team at email@example.com
Statistics of a different kind come under the spotlight in this week’s Dispatches, which reveals that increasing numbers of children are leaving primary school having failed to grasp the basic maths skills required by the national curriculum.
So is the standard of maths teaching in this country at fault? In the first of a two-part special, Dispatches tests primary teachers with a quiz of 27 maths questions. With mixed results… If you missed the programme, Part One is on 4oD now, and tune in to Channel 4 next Monday for Part Two.
You can play a shortened version of the maths test here. Some 92,000 of you – and counting – already have. Good luck!
Finally, brand new Family Guy spin-off The Cleveland Show is pulling in the numbers over on E4. The show airs on Monday nights, but in the wonderful world of 4oD any day is Cleveland day! If you’re not yet familiar with the show, check out this clip of an unfortunate Cleveland getting over-familiar with a possum. Have a nice day!
