This time it’s the Killearn Loch House Grand Design that’s up for grabs. From memory it’s got a lovely cantilevered staircase, and as the owner you have the ability to raise and lower the water level of the loch so that you’ll never be flooded.
Savills are listing it at £1.9million. I happen to know that this is my mum’s all-time favourite Grand Design, but she won’t be getting it for Christmas…

This week, our insatiable hunger for property porn led us to contemporary coastal homes. The collection below brings together some of the finest modern mansions the UK housing market has to offer, and they’re all perched atop cliffs, overlooking harbours or a stone’s throw from the beach.

Every now and then I hear about a unique property so interesting that my imagination instantly starts running away with me. This disused water tower in Warwickshire is no exception. With a guide price of £25,000 and wonderful views over rolling farmland, if ever a property were ripe for the Grand Designs treatment then this is it. read more

Having just finished watching tonight’s episode of Grand Designs, I can safely say that it’s the most ambitious, extravagant project I can remember.
The house is a testament to white, spartan modernism, or to paraphrase Kevin McCloud, ‘a taste of Hollywood in the Brighton hillside.’ Builder Barry and his wife Julie go about building a curved glass box of a house, complete with double height living space, art studio, swimming pool, hot tub, huge balcony, rooftop garden, floating bedroom pod and elliptical staircase.
In terms of scale, they couldn’t have gone much bigger. In terms of style, they couldn’t have gone much bolder. But what’s really quite nice about the project is that, throughout the many trials and tribulations life throws at Barry and Julie (and believe me, there are many), they end up realising that their fabulous wealth and showy house really don’t matter that much in the grand scheme of things.
Incidentally, if you’re planning on indulging in the Grand Designs drinking game, you’ll be wobbly-kneed and slurring by the end of it…

You can’t have missed that we’ve got a competition running to win lunch with Kevin McCloud. The very thought of it created a flurry of excited emails between us in the 4Homes office. What would it be like to sit down before the great man and try and hack your way through a pork sausage (for example) while discussing the merits of using hemp in a self build?
It even kept me awake last night. Emma from the 4Homes office wondered if Kevin would describe what he wanted from the menu by using his knife, fork and napkin to build a representation of the dish to the waiter. I’m more haunted by the thought that, were I to win, I’d order my food, and Kevin would then turn to an imaginary camera and say, ‘Of course, it’s all very well Lucy ordering beef, but it’s just not very eco-friendly, is it? And, more to the point, she’s never ordered a la carte before. If you ask me, this could all go horribly wrong.’ read more

You read it right, and no this isn’t some lame April Fool’s prank – you and a friend could indeed be tucking into a three course lunch, with a bottle of wine thrown in for good measure, with Grand Designs guru Kevin McCloud as your dinner guest. read more

I spent much of my Sunday this weekend getting to grips with Grand Designs 3D Self Build & Development.
It’s an enormous bit of kit, and is virtually all you’ll need if you’re planning an extension, self build project, or, like me, you still harbour long-failed ambitions of becoming a world-famous architect. read more

I’m in a very good mood today, because tonight’s Grand Designs is a revisit to what’s probably my favourite project ever featured on the programme. Kevin goes back to visit Francis Shaw and family, whose dedication to restoring Peel Castle in Yorkshire struck a chord with viewers and critics alike.
I don’t want to give away anything about what’s happened since, so you’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, here’s a few reminders about the magnificence of Francis’ Peel Castle restoration -
