Get Ready For The Home Show

The trailers started last night for George Clarke’s brand new property show, The Home Show. I’ve seen the first couple of episodes and so far I love what is a very refreshing format. A family with a home they’re not particularly happy with, or that doesn’t serve their needs, hands George a cheque for whatever they can afford and pretty much completely trust him to redesign their home for them, with (so far) ingenious results.

George’s task each show is incredibly difficult given that he has to design, source suppliers and arrange all the trades for each project, as well as the small matter of presenting each programme. I was particularly impressed with the results from the Brixton project (episode two).

Each episode we’re also treated to interior style guides from across the world, to help inspire people looking to get a completely new and authentic look at a reasonable cost.

Being the nice guy that he is, Mr Clarke has very kindly given us tons of advice for 4Homes readers on everything from the golden rules of renovating to the five favourite things from his house. Check out his dining table if you get the chance, it’s fantastic.

The Home Show starts on Wednesday 5th November at 8pm on Channel 4.

I have just watched the November 5th programme and was absolutely stunned at the lack of warning given about working with asbestos.
The boiler flue was partially asbestos cement, the back board to the boiler (which was casually handled) no doubt had asbestos fibre content and no mention was made of the likely asbestos content of 1970’s artex.
This casual approach to asbestos fibres is helping to fuel the 1500 per year death rate from asbestos fibre inhalation.
Please get a grip Channel 4.

£30,000! They did all that for that price- how does that work? It is totally unbelievable and I know – I’ve been renovating a house for the last two years.

Yeah it’s quite remarkable! Although of course George’s time as architect and project manager isall free, and he’s a man with an eye for a bargain and has exceptionally good contacts in the trades

Well I saw the first episode and in my opinion almost every minute was wasted. No real information but plenty of invented weak drama. Why do TV presenters all drive planet wrecking cars?

  10. At 3:24 pm on November 7, 2008 Neil Thompson wrote:

As r peth comments it is unbelievable that George managed to do all that for a £30k budget (the new boiler installation must have taken a big chunk from it). I understand that his time was free and all his trade contacts will have worked for ‘reasonable’ rates. The thing that always bugs me with ‘makeover’ programmes though is that all of the furniture and fittings really ’sell’ the project and it’s quietly mentioned at the end that ‘these did not come from the £30k budget’. An original Eames chair for pitys sake. Wouldn’t it be more honest to say either, Here is an empty house which will cost you £30k or actually tell the viewer how much it would really cost to finish it to the standard that your interior designer decides upon. Alternatively, you could put the families old furniture back (as they have spent all the budget on the structural work) but of course that wouldn’t make good TV. So go on, please tell us how much extra it would have cost to furnish the house to that standard. I realise I’m being naive in thinking that in making this type of programme you are going to present the viewer with a half finished job but by the same token please can you be honest with the viewer and tell us what it would actually cost to get the house you portray.

In response to Malcolm, sorry you didn’t like the show and I know what you mean regarding jeopardy/emotion in TV shows… I still enjoyed the programme though and think George is a natural presenter and an excellent architect. I can confirm that Kevin McCloud drives a biofuelled car, which i know might not be the long term solution but according to most schools of thought is considerably better than petrol or diesel!

Hi Neil. As I understand it most of the furniture came out of the £30K budget, but ‘dressing’ items such as toasters and kettles, curtains, bedding, and the infamous Eames chair were provided by the TV company. I’ll check with them to confirm…

    Hi,
Enjoyed the first show. I couldn’t believe when I saw my “avocado” green bathroom sink ! I adore it, it’s a design classic. I also have a chocolate brown one too. Please let me know if they were dumped as I need new (unavailable) washers for my taps!

Are you in need of a further house to go on your show? as I have a challenging one for George!

I was annoyed how Angela used the ‘venentian look’ to take a swipe at the british look when comparing hallways. Has it occurred to Angela that most people in britain do not live in houses worth £24 million? To somehow showcase a style, which was bloated by wealth and take a swipe at how small british hallways was a tad annoying. I am guessing here, but i am thinking that the average hall in a genovese tower block may not be too spacious. Maybe next week angela could compare a large british bathroom in say a chelsea mansion and take a downward swipe at say genovese bathrooms, especially those in towerblocks. Please do not use nationality to big up a style of a foreign country and use it to put down the style of another country (this being channel 4 that would be britain). At the end of the day most normal citizens of italy and britain use their hallspaces functionally.

Hi Susan – that sink was chucked i’m afraid. But i agree it’s a bit of a timeless classic. i’d recommend calling up a few architectural salvage yards and seeiong what you can find…

    Hi, great series.

A fresh take on a tired theme. As others have noted a bit “cheesy” in places, but no worse than most other shows.

Can you tell me where the long mirror/storage came from in the Brixton house, I’ve looked everywhere but can’t find details.

On the whole a great programme!

I am really pleased to see a programme presented by architects, as I think it is a good advert for what we can do and how we do it.

However, there are a few ‘reality’ issues that I will have to live with; as I appreciate that they help to make a great show:

The designs are not shown to or agreed with the owners.

The family have the luxury of moving out, rather than live on a building site for ‘x’ number of weeks, which makes the project easier to design and build and eases the stress on the family.

The ‘dressing’ of the rooms at additional cost, Neil Thompson, beat me to that one though!

I shall continue to watch with interest.
